Its black-and-white photographs are harsh, barren and yearning \u2013 delicately revealing a region in transition. From a man standing on sea ice in 1980s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/an-eerie-photographic-voyage-into-the-great-unknown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greenland<\/a> to a child in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/a-journey-inside-stalins-siberian-prison-camps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Siberia<\/a> near a campground in 2016, his images give an intimate look into the Arctic\u2019s past, present, and uncertain future.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Axelsson recounts a time when he had first begun documenting and speaking to the communities, and he passed by an elderly man in Qaanaaq, Greenland. With the help of Axelsson\u2019s translator, the man explained that something was wrong and that their world was slowly changing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThese people are a part of nature and so they sense things in a different way from most other people,\u201d he says. \u201cMy focus from the very beginning was to document this change, and I knew it would be a long-term project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/donald-trump-greenland-artic-sea-water-danish-pm-mette-frederiksen\/\"><em>POLITICO<\/em><\/a>, Greenland\u2019s ice sheets are losing 270 billion tonnes of water per year, as the climate crisis intensifies. 2024 saw the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/01\/1158891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hottest year ever<\/a> on record across the world, passing the 1.5C threshold set by the Paris agreement for the first time, while some projections predict that there will be zero ice left in the polar sea as soon as 2030.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Meanwhile, the President elect of the USA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/article\/heres-stop-coming-dystopia-feudalist-leaders-like-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>, has announced a desire to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cwy3y8l8nwlo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">take over Greenland<\/a> \u2013 refusing to rule out using military or economic force to do so \u2013 with some reports suggesting that he is looking to take advantage of the area\u2019s believed natural resources and strategic trading route geography once the ice has melted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not easy to photograph the Arctic,\u201d he says. \u201cYou are photographing in the coldest of conditions, and you have to try to get that coldness into the photo.\u201d The series conveys the effects of climate change on remote lands and their inhabitants.
