Said one staffer: \u201cIf you don\u2019t see it, that\u2019s what it looks like!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Monterey, CA \u2014 For the first time in its 32 years, the Monterey Bay Aquarium\u2019s open-ocean Great Tide Pool is playing host to an uncommon, charming and completely invisible ghost nautilus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve never not seen anything like it!\u201d explains Director of Interpretation Jim<br \/>Covell. \u201cWith all the warm water we\u2019ve been having this year and last, we\u2019ve been observing and also not observing lots of odd activity in the Monterey Bay. Today is no exception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the doors opened, guests rushed to take pictures of the unique and imperceptible animal apparently though perhaps not actually resting just off the Aquarium\u2019s back deck. Jim notes: \u201cBecause light doesn\u2019t refract, diffract, reflect or otherwise interact in any way with the ghost nautilus, it\u2019s difficult to know if it just arrived or if it\u2019s been here the whole time.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"500\" data-orig-height=\"600\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/f4bf44101f051e13f4378591278129bf\/tumblr_inline_o4x5awUE6L1qk45js_500.png\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"500\" data-orig-height=\"600\" width=\"500\" height=\"600\"\/><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i>An artist\u2019s impression of the ghost nautilus, based on visitor descriptions. <\/i>Editor\u2019s note:<i> The artist wishes to stress that this is an estimation and that this graphic could be \u201cway off\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The ghost nautilus was first missed during the 1982-83 El Ni\u00f1o in the great depths of the Monterey Submarine Canyon by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ghost nautilus is really the holy grail of subjective deep-sea fauna,\u201d said Stefanie Bush, an MBARI post-doctoral researcher studying mostly tangible cephalopods\u2014a group of mollusks that includes squid, octopuses, cuttlefishes as well as their discarnate relatives. She continues: \u201cThere aren\u2019t any reports of a ghost nautilus this close to shore, or anywhere really, so this is a very exciting day.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"2400\" data-orig-height=\"1600\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/2bb48c1bdae6caf33c328e697bcf5f6f\/tumblr_inline_o4xdm33CeN1qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"2400\" data-orig-height=\"1600\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\"\/><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i>A visiting mother and her two kids unsure that they\u2019re experiencing what everyone else may or may not be, but taking a picture just in case.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For staff and visitors alike, it\u2019s been a teachable moment in local cryptozoology.<br \/>\u201cMultiple staff and volunteers reported not having any evidence of a ghost nautilus in the Great Tide Pool this morning, which is the first sign that one may be around,\u201d reports Natalie Johnstun, a Guest Experience Ambassador with years of experience spotting animals of all kinds, observable and less-so, from the Aquarium\u2019s back decks. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot to sound too jaded, but for us it\u2019s just another day on the bay\u2014especially<br \/>because by all accounts that\u2019s exactly what it looks like,\u201d relays long-time Aquarium staffer Katie Tunngston. \u201cWe\u2019re glad our visitors get to connect with the incorporeal life of the ocean, even though many of us are blind to it at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the best thing I\u2019ve never seen!\u201d said Chris Kidde, a UK resident who<br \/>came to the Aquarium specifically to experience the wildlife of the bay using his eyes or extrasensory perception. \u201cI first learned about the amazing life of the area from BBC\u2019s Big Blue Live, and I figured that for every crazy creature on screen, there were probably many more that no one was noticing. So far with this ghost nautilus \u201cevent,\u201d I can\u2019t tell if I\u2019ve been disappointed or not\u2014it\u2019s been brilliant!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"2400\" data-orig-height=\"1602\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/707bc7c0014f1a40dcb009f1ca3c08ef\/tumblr_inline_o4xdm39X3W1qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"2400\" data-orig-height=\"1602\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\"\/><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i>Aquarium visitors braving morning rain, which seemingly passed clear through the nonplussed and nonphysical ghost nautilus.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When asked if the oddly endearing and entirely ethereal animal needed<br \/>rescue, Senior Spectral Cephalopod Aquarist Brett Grasse stated: \u201cIt\u2019s a wild animal that seems to be using the tide pool as a resting place\u2014it will return to the wild when it feels comfortable. In fact, it may have already done so, or perhaps it was never even here in the first place.\u201d He added, \u201cWe don\u2019t have any plans to try to exhibit ghost nautilus, given their metaphysical nature\u2014but then again, perhaps we\u2019ve never not had them on display.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As of this writing, the ghost nautilus is still indiscernible from the Aquarium\u2019s<br \/>Great Tide Pool backdrop.
