{"id":19397,"date":"2025-01-09T15:37:14","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T15:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/som2nypost.com\/business\/finance\/corporate-borrowers-kick-off-2025-with-record-setting-83bn-bond-bonanza\/"},"modified":"2025-01-09T15:37:14","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T15:37:14","slug":"corporate-borrowers-kick-off-2025-with-record-setting-83bn-bond-bonanza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/som2nypost.com\/?p=19397","title":{"rendered":"Corporate borrowers kick off 2025 with record-setting $83bn bond bonanza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=84ca561a-187a-4c40-883e-969fbafd973a&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Corporate borrowers kicked off 2025 with a record $83bn in dollar bond sales, capitalising on buoyant investor demand to raise debt ahead of any market volatility sparked by Donald Trump\u2019s return to power.<\/p>\n<p>Borrowing in the US dollar investment-grade and high-yield bond markets reached $83.4bn by January 8, the highest year-to-date figure since 1990, according to data from LSEG.<\/p>\n<p>High-grade borrowers have led the rush, including international banks such as BNP Paribas and Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale, car giants such as Toyota, and heavy machinery maker Caterpillar. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/us-banks\" data-trackable=\"link\">US banks<\/a> are expected to join the fray later in January after their earnings season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market is strong, so there is no need for them to delay. They\u2019re trying to come as early as possible,\u201d said Marc Baigneres, global co-head of investment-grade finance at JPMorgan.<\/p>\n<p>The rush of new debt sales comes as spreads \u2014 the difference between the yield on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/corporate-bonds\" data-trackable=\"link\">corporate debt<\/a> versus safer government bonds \u2014 are near multi-decade lows, spurring companies to raise funds cheaply while they can. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of risks to spreads \u2014 inflation picking up, the economy slowing down, the Fed potentially pausing rate cuts and even moving on to rate hikes,\u201d said Maureen O\u2019Connor, global head of Wells Fargo\u2019s high-grade debt syndicate.<\/p>\n<p>The average US investment-grade spread sat at just 0.83 percentage points on Wednesday, not far above its narrowest point since the late 1990s, according to ICE BOFA.<\/p>\n<p>January is typically busy for debt issuance, especially by banks. But the latest deal burst comes as companies lock in cheaper debt before Trump\u2019s inauguration \u2014 with economists warning that the incoming US president\u2019s telegraphed policies, including trade tariffs, could be inflationary. <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, minutes from the last Federal Reserve meeting showed that officials were also concerned about inflation and wanted to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d4d2ee21-f124-48bb-ae38-983ac159b470\" data-trackable=\"link\">\u201ccareful\u201d<\/a> with the pace of future rate cuts. <\/p>\n<p>Big borrowers are also under pressure to refinance quickly, with $850bn of high-grade dollar debt set to mature this year and another $1tn in 2026, according to Wells Fargo calculations.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"n-content-image n-content-image--full\" data-component=\"image-set\"><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3A9f16794c-97e6-4665-8971-c7cd6843f2f6?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=1 1x\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\"\/><source media=\"(max-width: 490px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/ftcms%3Ac0ac6d97-bbab-45db-b680-af3b58e8811f?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=300&amp;dpr=1 1x\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fd6c748xw2pzm8.cloudfront.net%2Fprod%2Fef0c60f0-ce0c-11ef-bfc1-63fc711b6948-standard.png?source=next-article&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;quality=highest&amp;width=700&amp;dpr=1\" alt=\"Column chart of Dollar bond issuance across investment-grade and high-yield markets ($bn) showing Record start to year for US corporate bond issuance\" data-image-type=\"graphic\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very attractive market environment\u201d for borrowers, said Dan Mead, head of Bank of America\u2019s investment-grade syndicate. \u201cYou continue to see healthy investor cash balances and receptivity to the new issues coming to market, and pricing at very attractive spreads that leads to issuers looking to go sooner rather than waiting.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Edward Al-Hussainy, senior interest rate and currency analyst at Columbia Threadneedle, said pension funds and insurance companies were \u201cexceptionally predisposed\u201d at the moment to buy debt.<\/p>\n<p>Banks are typically first to take advantage of narrow spreads and are among the most active issuers so far. But market participants said non-financial borrowers could join the rush before the 10-year Treasury yield \u2014 a benchmark for global borrowing costs \u2014 rises any further. It now sits at about 4.7 per cent after climbing sharply in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a couple of fairly critical risk events in January,\u201d said O\u2019Connor, pointing to US jobs data due on Friday, which will offer investors clues about the future path of interest rates, and Trump\u2019s January 20 inauguration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve heard quite a bit of rhetoric from the incoming administration on what the market could see quickly on the back of that,\u201d O\u2019Connor said. \u201cI think there is a concern that that could catalyse another leg higher in Treasury yields.\u201d Some \u201ccoupon-focused borrowers\u201d \u2014 meaning companies focused primarily on the total yield they pay to investors \u2014 \u201care trying to get in front of that\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s volumes, which have been condensed to just three days by shortened trading hours on Thursday, and Friday\u2019s payrolls, follow on from a borrowing bonanza in 2024 \u2014 when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3bb5df0d-f5d6-4360-9a6a-d27dabb3e5a2\" data-trackable=\"link\">global issuance of corporate bonds and leveraged loans hit a record $8tn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the current conditions remained favourable for sellers of debt, some buyers said they were now willing to sit on the sidelines until more alluring conditions emerge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vast majority of deals are coming at levels that leave very little value on the table,\u201d said Andrzej Skiba, head of BlueBay US fixed income at RBC GAM. \u201c[It has] looked rather unappealing and we prefer to keep powder dry for a potential increase in volatility following the inauguration, as the market finds out this new policy mix and the Fed\u2019s response to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world Corporate borrowers kicked off 2025 with a record $83bn in dollar bond sales, capitalising on buoyant investor demand to raise debt ahead of any market volatility sparked by Donald Trump\u2019s return to power.
