When you buy through these links, we may earn an affiliate commission.<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<div class=\"bubblewrap bubblewrap--first\">\n<p><em>Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn a Poem by Heart<\/h2>\n<p>Like the smart and sophisticated socialite who finds their way to a piano and provides the perfect, perhaps jazzy, soundtrack to a gathering of self-aware intellectuals, you too can be a most cultured party-goer\u2013and you don\u2019t even have to pretend you\u2019re going to learn a new instrument at your grown age! All you have to do is memorize a poem and bounce from conversation to conversation in search of an opening to elocute. As it happens, <em>The New York Times<\/em> recently concluded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/books\/edna-st-vincent-millay-recuerdo-poem-challenge.html\">a weeklong exercise designed to help you learn a poem by heart<\/a>. With its \u201cWe were very tired, we were very merry\u201d refrain, Edna St. Vincent Millay\u2019s \u201cRecuerdo\u201d is the perfect poem to recite at the end of a party when the conversation has lulled and people are eyeing the door. Just close your eyes, slip into the character of the exhausted artiste at a salon, and deliver your freshly-memorized poem to the weary. You\u2019ll clear the room in no time. Jokes aside, I found the exercise delightful and mentally nourishing. I haven\u2019t had reason to memorize a poem since I was in school, and it turns out this practice is also a good way to take your mind off of other troubles, if even for a moment. I might do more of this in my own time as I\u2019m currently reading <a title=\"Buy from Thriftbooks\" product-id=\"B0D2BGTJP1\" href=\"https:\/\/prf.hn\/click\/camref:1101lkCeo\/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thriftbooks.com%2Fw%2Fthe-magpie-at-night-the-complete-poems-of-li-qingzhao-1084-1151_li-qingzhao%2F52813324%2F\" target=\"_blank\" butter=\"butter\" nofollow=\"nofollow\" data-title=\"The Magpie at Night: The Complete Poems of Li Qingzhao (1084\u20131151)\" data-publisher=\"Farrar, Straus and Giroux\" data-releasedate=\"2025-02-25\" data-author=\"Qingzhao, Li\" data-ean=\"\" data-asin=\"B0D2BGTJP1\" class=\"butter\" rel=\"noopener\">The Magpie at Night: The Complete Poems of Li Qingzhao (1084-1151)<\/a>, translated by Wendy Chen, which is full of short, vivid, meditative poems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bubblewrap bubblewrap--second\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do We Really Need More Male Novelists?<\/h2>\n<p>Ella Creamer asks this question over at <em>The Guardian<\/em>. You may have heard word of Conduit Books, a new indie press that will initially focus on publishing literary fiction and memoir by male authors. Jude Cook, the novelist and critic behind Conduit, is going this direction because he sees male authors as \u201coften overlooked\u201d in a publishing landscape correcting for years of male domination and awareness of toxic masculinity in literature. What Creamer accomplishes in this piece is to point out that the data behind the publishing rates and success of male novelists doesn\u2019t offer a clear enough picture to make my eyes go saucer-sized with recognition of a real problem. I came away from the article with the same belief I had going in: men aren\u2019t reading as many novels as women. I don\u2019t want to rehash the men aren\u2019t reading discourse of earlier this year, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/392971\/men-reading-fiction-statistics-fact-checked\">you can explore it at <em>Vox<\/em><\/a>. Also, in a blog post from the National Endowment for the Arts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/stories\/blog\/2025\/men-women-split-reading-real-and-persists-amid-historical-rate-declines#:~:text=In%202017%2C%20the%20share%20of,to%2027.7%20percent%20in%202022.\">Sunil Iyengar reports these numbers<\/a>, \u201cIn 2017, the share of women reading novels or short stories was down to 50.0 percent, and, in 2022, to 46.9 percent. I also love <em>McSweeney\u2019s<\/em> which, in part, is an endless font of satire that can make me lol and lolsob when I need it most. Today, we got <a title=\"Buy from Amazon\" product-id=\"1933390948\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1933390948\/ref=as_li_tf_il?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=boorio-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349&amp;creativeASIN=1933390948\" target=\"_blank\" butter=\"butter\" nofollow=\"nofollow\" data-title=\"Choose Your Own Adventure 4-Book Boxed Set #1: Origin Four (The Abominable Snowman, Journey Under The Sea, Space And Beyond, The Lost Jewels of Nabooti) (Choose Your Own Adventure Box Sets)\" data-publisher=\"Choose Your Own Adventure\" data-releasedate=\"2006-11-01\" data-author=\"Montgomery, R. A.\" data-ean=\"9781933390949\" data-asin=\"1933390948\" class=\"butter\" rel=\"noopener\">Choose Your Own Adventure<\/a> satire\u2013you know, those books you stacked the quality of your instincts against but ultimately used to indulge your latent nihilism by exploring worst possible outcomes. Now you can skip the moral dilemmas and existential crises and get right to the nihilism with Justin Bendell who compiles endings that, while missing from the real books, match the level of dire kids confronted in those books, starting with Artax-flavored grief. These endings are not for the kids, but they\u2019re absolutely for me. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcsweeneys.net\/articles\/choose-your-own-adventure-endings-only\">Here\u2019s your dose of clowns, oxen, and dysentery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In Case You\u2019re Stressed About Mother\u2019s Day<\/h2>\n<p>Uh oh.
