The first 14 on his own personal netlabel <em>novinyl.net, <\/em>and some labels like <em>Neotantra, Mare Nostrum <\/em>and <em>Chitra Records<\/em> since 2022. <br \/>His latest album, <strong><em>Desire Paths, <\/em><\/strong>is the third release on the brand new <em>Owl Totem Recordings<\/em> \u2013 the <em>\u2018dark vibes division\u2019<\/em> of <em>Dronarivm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Whether these are indeed \u2018dark vibes\u2019 is for the listener to judge \u2013 I did not experience this as \u2018dark ambient\u2019 myself at all. As a duo, they use that experience to create music celebrating their inspiration from <em>\u2018mid-century\u2019 <\/em>electronic composers. This refers to composers like <em>Morton Subotnick, \u00c9liane Radigue, Edgar Var\u00e8se, Iannis Xenakis, LaMonte Young<\/em>, but also artists such as <em>Vangelis, Steve Reich, Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream,<\/em> and <em>Jean-Michel Jarre.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Reading such a list usually suggests you\u2019re in for a nostalgic trip with musicians keen on re-creating the music from that era as exactly as possible. But not in the case of <strong><em>Lawson &amp; Merril<\/em><\/strong>. What struck me is that the influences of the artists and composers mentioned are definitely audible (the \u2018pop\u2019 artists somewhat more prominent than the composers by the way). At the same time, the duo manages to turn all those influences into their own blend, which is music from NOW as much as it uses nostalgic <em>\u2018mid-century\u2019 <\/em>elements and citations. Each of these long tracks (12-16 minutes each, except the 8-minute closing track) is a carefully crafted <em>\u2018sonic landscape that explores our macro and microcosmic relationship to time and place\u2019. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The album title may suggest that mainly analogue synths were used, but that is not entirely true: <strong><em>Analogues<\/em><\/strong> is created with a mixture of vintage and modern analog and digital synthesizers with <em>\u2018a fair amount\u2019 <\/em>of electronic processing. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the duo\u2019s second album, following up <em>Signals<\/em> from 2022 which was also released on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/neumarecords.org\/\">Neuma Records<\/a><\/em>.
