{"id":284462,"date":"2025-06-09T22:18:34","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T22:18:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/som2nypost.com\/uncategorized\/lil-wayne-taps-a-lost-dionne-warwick-gem-from-1973-and-the-result-is-tha-carter-vis-best-track\/"},"modified":"2025-06-09T22:18:34","modified_gmt":"2025-06-09T22:18:34","slug":"lil-wayne-taps-a-lost-dionne-warwick-gem-from-1973-and-the-result-is-tha-carter-vis-best-track","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/som2nypost.com\/?p=284462","title":{"rendered":"Lil Wayne Taps a Lost Dionne Warwick Gem from 1973\u2014And the Result is Tha Carter VI\u2019s Best Track"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>(June 9, 2025).\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ll admit it: I\u2019m not the target audience for most new hip-hop albums or artists these days.\u00a0\u00a0But then again, calling Lil Wayne a \u201cnew\u201d rapper in 2025 feels a bit like calling Celine Dion a current pop diva \u2014 technically true, but also kind of missing the point.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s also why I feel like I still know a great new Weezy tune when I hear one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wayne, now more than two decades deep into his career and undoubtedly a future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, dropped\u00a0<em>Tha Carter VI<\/em>\u00a0on Friday (June 6), a 19-track opus with a guest list that zigzags from BigXthaPlug and Machine Gun Kelly to Bono and Andrea Bocelli.\u00a0\u00a0Yep, that Andrea Bocelli (it feels like only Wayne can pull off \u201cAve Maria\u201d set to a trap beat).<\/p>\n<p>And yet, despite the album\u2019s sprawling ambition, one track stood out to me so much I\u2019ve been running it on repeat ever since:\u00a0<strong>\u201cBein\u2019 Myself.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lil Wayne - Bein Myself (Visualizer) ft. Mannie Fresh\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RmPluCOudDk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This is Wayne in full-on self-love mode \u2014 part chest-thumping braggadocio, part soulful introspection, and 100% Tunechi.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s hip-hop\u2019s version of pop\u2019s \u201cMy Life,\u201d without the obfuscation of a sugary pop musical bed.  It\u2019s also a lyrical flex wrapped in a throwback groove that makes a pretty bold statement: there\u2019s only one Wayne, and he\u2019s not changing for you or anybody else.<\/p>\n<p>Check this chorus:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m just bein\u2019 myself, just bein\u2019 myself<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I roll with myself, make peace with myself<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I give all of myself, not piece of myself<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No starvin\u2019 myself, I eat you myself<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Do a song by myself and feature myself<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>DJ, play nothin\u2019 but me\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By the time he gets to \u201cDo a song by myself and feature myself,\u201d you\u2019re either smirking or nodding along \u2014 or both.\u00a0\u00a0On other zingers like\u00a0<em>\u201cGet off my lawn because your lawn chair ain\u2019t a throne yet\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>\u201cBefore I let you piss me off, I\u2019ll pee on myself,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0it\u2019s Weezy letting us know that not only is he the self-proclaimed occupant of the rap throne, but that no one can remove him from it but himself.<\/p>\n<p>But while Wayne\u2019s swagger sells the message, it\u2019s the\u00a0<strong>sample\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 and the creative partnership behind it \u2014 that truly makes this track the standout it is.<\/p>\n<p>For \u201cBein\u2019 Myself,\u201d Wayne reunites with fellow New Orleans legend and longtime collaborator\u00a0<strong>Mannie Fresh<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Together, they crate-dig their way back to 1973 and unearth a little-known Dionne Warwick tune called\u00a0<strong>\u201c(I\u2019m) Just Being Myself.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a deep cut most folks \u2014 even diehard Dionne fans \u2014 likely missed or simply forgot.\u00a0\u00a0But what a find!<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[I&#039;m] Just Being Myself\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/72-5uG6l3Js?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>That original track came from an overlooked album of the same name (sans the subtitle), a one-off collaboration between Warwick and Motown\u2019s famed Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting\/production trio (while the singer was with Warner Brothers Records (after a successful career on Scepter).\u00a0\u00a0It marked a crossroads for both parties: Dionne was fresh off her split from legendary songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and H-D-H were five years removed from their Motown heyday and two years from their success with The Honey Cone (\u201cWant Ads,\u201d \u201cStick Up\u201d).\u00a0\u00a0Their 1973 collab with Warwick didn\u2019t exactly set the charts on fire \u2014\u00a0<em>Just Being Myself<\/em>\u00a0peaked at a humble No. 178 on the Billboard 200, and its title track only reached No. 62 on the soul singles chart (the album was Dionne\u2019s first not to generate any Hot 100 singles).<\/p>\n<p>But creatively?\u00a0\u00a0The song (and to some degree, the album)\u00a0<em>slaps\u00a0<\/em>\u2014 by \u201870s soul standards or otherwise.\u00a0\u00a0On \u201c(I\u2019m) Just Being Myself,\u201d Warwick delivers one of her most powerful, emotional vocals of the era.\u00a0\u00a0She\u2019s not just singing; she\u2019s\u00a0<em>commanding<\/em>, complete with punchy yelps and those strident \u201chey, hey, hey, hey!\u201d shouts directly sampled on Wayne\u2019s version.\u00a0\u00a0Musically, the Bacharach\/David baroque-pop sheen is gone, replaced with tribal percussion, fluttering flutes, and stripped-down strings, all of which \u2014 at a slightly slowed speed \u2014 provide a great backdrop for Weezy\u2019s new track.<\/p>\n<p>But on the original, Dionne at times sounds like a woman inspired, practically proclaiming: \u201cI\u2019m me, and I\u2019m not molding myself to your expectations anymore!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a convincing rebuke to whomever dared try making her anything other than who she was.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s probably the most \u201csoul\u201d Dionne ever sounded in the \u201870s \u2014 with arguably her joint venture with Thom Bell and the Spinners for \u201cThen Came You\u201d a year later being the lone exception.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s sad when one realizes that it was only her reduced star status at the time that prevented 1973\u2019s \u201cJust Being Myself\u201d \u2014 arguably Dionne at her most raw, most soulful, most defiant \u2014 from getting any love.\u00a0\u00a0In the hands of a Gladys or an Aretha that year, the song would\u2019ve been a smash!<\/p>\n<p>That Mannie Fresh and Wayne even\u00a0<em>found<\/em>\u00a0this song is a crate-digger\u2019s flex in itself.\u00a0\u00a0That they turned it into a contemporary gem is a testament to their ear for buried treasure and their shared reverence for soul music history.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m just imagining how the creative process went: 56-year-old Mannie finds the track and tells Weezy we\u2019re going to build the whole concept around it \u2014 lyrically and musically.\u00a0\u00a0And it worked!<\/p>\n<p>So while\u00a0<em>Tha Carter VI<\/em>\u00a0may live or die by the streams and critiques it racks up in the weeks ahead, one thing\u2019s clear: \u201cBein\u2019 Myself\u201d is the album\u2019s crown jewel.\u00a0\u00a0And when Wayne jumps up an octave and leans into that trademark autotuned falsetto on the hook, it\u2019s like even <em>he<\/em>\u00a0knows it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" data-attachment-id=\"22777\"
