A week <\/span>ago,<\/span> on May 9<\/span><\/span>th<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>was National Moscato Day.\u00a0 Whether<\/span> <\/span>you’r<\/span>e<\/span> a follow<\/span>er of these national wine days or not<\/span>,<\/span> it<\/span> <\/span>provide<\/span>s<\/span> the perfect opportunity to have a reason to explore wine grapes or wine regions and try something new or that you<\/span> <\/span>haven\u2019<\/span>t<\/span> had in some time<\/span>.\u00a0 In my house we are lovers of dessert wines<\/span>, <\/span>especially <\/span>the lighter, less unctuous styles that are refreshing like Moscato<\/span> <\/span>d\u2019Ast<\/span>i<\/span> <\/span>can be.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I attended a virtual tasting some months ago hosted by Studio Cru and was led by the owner of the <\/span>Ca\u2019d\u2019Gal<\/span> winery, Alessandro <\/span>Varagnolo<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The <\/span>Ca\u2019d\u2019Gal<\/span> brand has 2 wineries in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. \u00a0One is Tenuta <\/span>Valdivilla<\/span>, <\/span>s<\/span>et<\/span> in the<\/span> hills of the<\/span> Langhe wine <\/span>region<\/span> in the town of Santo Stefano Belbo covering 6 hectares. \u00a0A few kilometers away<\/span>, in the gentle hills of the Monferrato area in <\/span>Calamandrana<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>is the other <\/span>property<\/span>, Tenuta La Cova<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>This property has 9 <\/span>hectares<\/span> of vineya<\/span>rds with ano<\/span>ther 5 hectares of <\/span>h<\/span>azelnuts<\/span> <\/span>and the rest of the surrounding area is cov<\/span>ered by f<\/span>orest<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I<\/span>t<\/span> was <\/span>e<\/span>stablished<\/span> <\/span>back in 1989, but Alessandro took the win<\/span>ery over 2 <\/span>years ago since the prior owner<\/span>, Alessandro <\/span>B<\/span>uido<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>d<\/span>idn\u2019t<\/span> <\/span>have children to pass <\/span>his<\/span> legacy on to.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The soils of the area are rich in marine sediment and the hills <\/span>contain<\/span> a crumbly soil<\/span> with a high amount of limestone in their southern slopes.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All the wines of <\/span>Ca\u2019d\u2019Gal<\/span> featured today are produced with the Moscato, or Muscat grape, which typically produce white wines that have beautiful fruity aromatics followed by fruitful notes on the palate of peach and apricot.\u00a0\u00a0If you are a lover of wines that are sweet these are for you!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The<\/span><\/span> <\/span>Ca\u2019d\u2019Gal<\/span> <\/span>Asti Spumante DOCG <\/span><\/span>is made 100% from Moscato Bianco <\/span>from <\/span>and comes from their youngest vin<\/span>eyards<\/span>, 20-45 years in age<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span> This is a newer wine <\/span>they\u2019re<\/span> producing drawn up from the demand from the American market for a fresh wine. \u00a0<\/span> <\/span>It is made with the<\/span> <\/span>charm<\/span>a<\/span>t<\/span>, or <\/span>Martinotti<\/span> method, where the fermentation was stopped at 7% ABV.\u00a0 Floral aromas with apricot notes. Delicate and light bubbles on the palate<\/span>.\u00a0 A nice balance with a touch of sweetness with stone fruit notes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Ca\u2019d\u2019Gal<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

The <\/span><\/span>2023 <\/span>Ca\u2019d\u2019Gal<\/span> <\/span>Lumine Moscato <\/span>d\u2019Asti<\/span> DOCG<\/span><\/span> is named after <\/span>lumin<\/span> in Italian<\/span>, <\/span>representing<\/span> the <\/span>sun touched<\/span> grapes grown in the vineyards.\u00a0 This is their largest production at 50,000 bottles annually.\u00a0 With this wine the fermentation is stopped at 5% ABV.\u00a0 Bright, brilliant straw colored in the glass with aromas of peach and apricot.\u00a0 A light <\/span>effervescence<\/span> and light bodied on the palate with a touch of sweetness.\u00a0 A pleasurable wine to sip!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span><\/span>2023\u00a0<\/span>Ca\u2019d\u2019Gal<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Sant\u2019Ilario<\/span> Canelli DOCG<\/span><\/span> is made from a single vineyard of <\/span>70-year-old<\/span> vines on sandy soils<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span> <\/span>The wine is kept<\/span> in stainless steel<\/span> at 0 degrees after filtration with the le<\/span>es<\/span> until the spring bottling and is released in September of the following year<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Floral stone fruit aromas also showing on the palate with a light effervescence and nice minerality on the finish.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The <\/span><\/span>2016\u00a0<\/span>Ca\u2019d\u2019Gal<\/span>\u00a0Vite Vecchia Moscato <\/span>d\u2019Asti<\/span> DOCG<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>also called <\/span>vigna<\/span> <\/span>vecchia<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> <\/span>comes from a single vineyard in <\/span>Valdivilla<\/span> in a southeast position known as \u201csori\u201d. \u00a0<\/span>This is their last wine to harvest so that the gra<\/span>p<\/span>es are overripe for balance of the sugar and acidity. \u00a0 <\/span>These bottles are <\/span>left to age for <\/span>60 months<\/span> in <\/span>a <\/span>temperature-controlled<\/span> <\/span>grotto made of <\/span>tufo<\/span>\u00a0that is dark and humid<\/span> providing a natural aging environment. \u00a0This is where the \u201cmagic happens\u201d as Alessandro expressed. \u00a0The bottles <\/span>lay in sand filled <\/span>wooden boxes<\/span>. \u00a0They have found that this results in the wines having a richness and finesse allowing the bottles to withstand longevity. \u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yellow and straw colored with aromas of tangerine and apricot. \u00a0<\/span>Beautiful freshness and finesse with a well-balanced wine showing stone fruit on the palate and a hint of an herbal characteristic. \u00a0This wine is produced in limited quantities.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What kinds of food can I pair with Moscato<\/span>?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Although I tend to drink Moscato on <\/span>its<\/span> own<\/span>,<\/span> it can be a great accompaniment to a charcuterie board with dried meats or even paired with spicy foods<\/span> <\/span>a<\/span>n<\/span>d<\/span> <\/span>o<\/span>f<\/span> <\/span>c<\/span>o<\/span>u<\/span>r<\/span>s<\/span>e<\/span> <\/span>s<\/span>e<\/span>l<\/span>e<\/span>c<\/span>t<\/span> <\/span>d<\/span>e<\/span>s<\/span>s<\/span>e<\/span>r<\/span>t<\/span> <\/span>d<\/span>i<\/span>s<\/span>h<\/span>e<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
