It was a heavy decision\u2014not made lightly.<\/p>\n
What matters as much as the action taken was the\u00a0way<\/em>\u00a0it was taken. President Bush worked in cooperation with state and local leaders from\u00a0both<\/em>\u00a0parties. He understood the gravity of federal force on American soil. And though California had rejected him at the ballot box, Bush rose above partisanship. He wasn\u2019t governing out of spite. He was governing as a statesman\u2014with a sense of duty to every American, not just his base.<\/p>\n
Fast-forward to the present<\/em>\u00a0. . .<\/strong><\/h3>\n
On Friday, after protests broke out across California in response to a sweeping series of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, President Donald Trump deployed 4,100 National Guard troops and 700 U.S. Marines to the state. But this wasn\u2019t a moment of bipartisan crisis management. There was no request from the mayor or the governor.<\/p>\n
This was unilateral . . . punitive . . .\u00a0personal<\/em>.<\/p>\n
This isn\u2019t 1992 and George H.W. Bush. This is Donald Trump, and it\u2019s part of a disturbing \u201cwhat will he do next\u201d pattern.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s move comes on the heels of weeks of escalating rhetoric. He has repeatedly vilified California as a \u201cfailed state,\u201d mocked its leaders\u2014especially Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass\u2014and relished every opportunity to portray the state as enemy territory. In his mind, there\u2019s \u201chis America,\u201d and there\u2019s those who didn\u2019t vote for him.<\/p>\n
They don\u2019t count<\/em>.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s happening here? California, the most populous and diverse state in the nation, has become a convenient punching bag for Trump\u2019s culture war. He\u2019s not sending troops to de-escalate. He\u2019s sending them to divide and dominate. He\u2019s not trying to keep the peace. He\u2019s stoking conflict. And he\u2019s shredding the norms of federalism, civility, and democratic restraint.<\/p>\n
To reasonable Republicans who still revere the legacies of George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan: I know you\u2019re out there. This is your moment.<\/p>\n
You know what leadership looks like\u2014and what it doesn\u2019t. Ronald Reagan, California\u2019s own governor before becoming president, would not have used federal force as political gamesmanship or payback. George H.W. Bush, veteran of World War II and lifelong public servant, wrote in his journal that he wanted to be \u201cPresident of all the people, not just the base.\u201d He\u2019d be appalled by this presidential brutality.<\/p>\n
Where are you, sensible Republicans? We need you more than ever.<\/p>\n

Not every policy disagreement has to become a war. Not every protest has to be a pretext for military action. Not every disagreement makes someone an enemy of the state. This isn\u2019t just about California. This is about preserving the idea that America is still one nation.<\/p>\n
What we\u2019re witnessing in California and elsewhere isn\u2019t law and order. It\u2019s\u00a0punishment politics\u2014<\/em>government by vendetta. And if this goes unchallenged, it won\u2019t stop at California.<\/p>\n
Will Illinois be next? New York? Will your state be next, or mine? Any state that dares to reject Trump\u2019s politics is in the crosshairs. If we normalize federal forces being used against our own citizens\u2014not for protection, but for political theater\u2014we cross a line from democracy into something darker.<\/p>\n
Whatever your politics has been, it isn\u2019t\u00a0this.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>Please, don\u2019t stay silent . . . because silence is complicity . . . and complicity is how democracies die.<\/p>\n
Don\u2019t change your conservative stripes. Don\u2019t be Democrat or Independent. Be who you are: a Regan-Bush Republican. Be an\u00a0American<\/em>. A principled\u00a0American<\/em>, who understands that power must be wielded with humility\u2014not as a cudgel against the states you don\u2019t like or the people who cast votes for someone else.<\/p>\n
In 1992, George H.W. Bush reached across the aisle, even when it was politically inconvenient. In 2025, when Donald Trump reaches for the military, it\u2019s to punish his enemies. And that, my Republican friends, is the the difference between a president and an autocrat.<\/em><\/p>\n
