There\u2019s a real spirit of togetherness and gathering in <em>Good Things<\/em>, so getting together in person with 1,700 people felt like  a great way to talk about Samin\u2019s food ideas in the cookbook\u2014and answer listener questions that came from folks in the Bay Area!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">For a transcript of this episode, <a href=\"https:\/\/homecooking.show\/s\/HC-Episode-22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">click here. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Food ideas discussed in this episode:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The best thing Hrishi has eaten lately: Chocolate babka, an entire loaf, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loquatbakery.com\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Loquat Bakery<\/span><\/a>, that Samin gave him and which he did not share.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This is not only the best thing Samin has eaten lately, but is maybe one of the TOP 5 BEST IN HER LIFE things she\u2019s eaten: While on vacation in Sicily, Samin visited the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/en\/noto\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Noto<\/span><\/a>, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/watch\/80198496?trackId=14277283&amp;tctx=-97%2C-97%2C%2C%2C%2C%2C%2C%2C80007945%2CVideo%3A80198496%2CdetailsPageEpisodePlayButton\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">famous<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caffesicilia.it\/index.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Cafe Sicillia<\/span><\/a>. There, she did have for breakfast an espresso granita on top of a piece of brioche with whipped cream. Because it is so hot in Sicily, this is what they do in lieu of hot espresso. She also had almond milk with the incredible almonds from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/en\/sapore\/avola-almond-the-reigning-queen-of-flavour\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Avola<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Now on to the show, in which we are coming to you LIVE from City Arts &amp; Lectures at the Sydney Goldstein Theater to kick off the Good Things tour!!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Two very important folks created the images for <em>SFAH<\/em> and <em>Good Things<\/em> and have been very influential collaborators of Samin\u2019s. Huge shout out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wendymacnaughton.com\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Wendy MacNaughton<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ayabrackett.com\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Aya Brackett<\/span><\/a>! Check out the rest of their work. They are both brilliant artists!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This Raymond Carver short story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicshorts.com\/stories\/sgthing.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><em>A Small, Good Thing<\/em><\/span><\/a>, is a real building block of <em>Good Things<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Lexie from Oakland wants to know: what kinds of things are just better when you make them from scratch? Low skill\/high delicious especially!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Remember: Immersion blender for everything!!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">When you next visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viacarota.com\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Via Carota<\/span><\/a> in New York, Hrishi recommends a lunch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/08\/magazine\/best-green-salad-recipe.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Insalata Verde<\/span><\/a> and their French fries eaten at an average rate of 400 fries per bite.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">We got a group of questions about cooking for groups:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Thing #1: Just know that there will be too many dietary restrictions to list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Thing #2: We always try to accommodate our friends and make sure everyone has a good meal\u2013we\u2019re not monsters!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Hrishi requested a cohesive menu for this kind of group hosting, so here we go:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/arts-culture\/food-cooking\/inside-samin-nosrats-tiny-kitchen-costco-tuna-popcorn-for-dinner-and-other-personal-favorites-9eff9319\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Forever Popcorn<\/span><\/a> (as influenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/bjornqorn.com\/collections\/frontpage\/products\/bjornqorn-12-pack\" target=\"_blank\">BjornQorn<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ciaosamin.substack.com\/p\/end-of-summer-marinated-bean-salad?r=58f48\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Hearty Bean Salad<\/span><\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/cooking.nytimes.com\/recipes\/1027003-house-dressing?unlocked_article_code=1.jE8.xSJT.v8837kndrFvc\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">House Dressing<\/span><\/a> (for instance!)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Side of slow roasted salmon<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A big green salad<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Many Condiments, such as:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Green sauce<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Chile crisp<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Herb labne<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A warm loaf of bread<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And what about dessert?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Always cookies, if Hrishi is coming to dinner!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Otherwise, a made-in-advance dessert like Flan or Burnt Honey Icebox Cake adapted from Michelle Polzine of the now closed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thriftbooks.com\/w\/baking-at-the-20th-century-cafe-iconic-european-sweets-and-savories-with-new-world-flavors_michelle-polzine\/25844404\/item\/73903334\/?mkwid=%7cdc&amp;pcrid=76897273066017&amp;pkw=&amp;pmt=be&amp;slid=&amp;product=73903334&amp;plc=&amp;pgrid=1230353808544789&amp;ptaid=pla-4580496735976160&amp;utm_source=bing&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=Shopping+-+High+Vol+Scarce+-+%2410+-+%2450&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=%7cdc%7cpcrid%7c76897273066017%7cpkw%7c%7cpmt%7cbe%7cproduct%7c73903334%7cslid%7c%7cpgrid%7c1230353808544789%7cptaid%7cpla-4580496735976160%7c&amp;msclkid=ac568eac4b151c04039be661f39139ca#idiq=73903334&amp;edition=27610217\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">20th Century Cafe<\/span><\/a> and her<a href=\"https:\/\/cooking.nytimes.com\/recipes\/1019089-russian-honey-cake\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"> Russian Honey Cake<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">We all have to remind ourselves that the simple things are still worth writing about, making, and\/or sharing\u2013like Kid Crudit\u00e9s, which is just cut up vegetables drizzled with seasoned rice vinegar and flaky salt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A note on substitutions: Samin earnestly endeavored to write a book of recipes and matrices flexible and thoughtful enough that substitutions become easier to see; however, please don\u2019t @ her if you\u2019ve changed 90% of the recipe and it didn\u2019t work out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">You\u2019re welcome to go commiserate with the like-minded in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/dining\/best-nyt-cooking-recipes.html?smid=url-share&amp;referringSource=deeplink&amp;rsrc=deeplink\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">NYT Cooking Comments<\/span><\/a> section until you\u2019ve figured out where responsibility actually rests if you have taken so many liberties. (Hint: It is no longer with the writer!)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Aparna had a question about what recipe Samin couldn\u2019t put in the cookbook and she also had a (ahem) <em>surprise<\/em> question for Hrishi about what he would call his cookbook were he to write one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Hold on to your hats because he only had the whole day to think on it (and on chocolate babkas) and it\u2019s a doozy: \u201cOnly Burgers in the Building.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Sorry. We\u2019re really sorry about that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The answer (or part of it) to Aparna\u2019s question is that Samin couldn\u2019t include her many <em>ugly<\/em> foods that she felt would not photograph well. For instance, her accidental plagiarism of Yotam Ottolenghi&#8217;s iconic turkey and zucchini meatballs. She did demote it to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ciaosamin.substack.com?utm_source=navbar&amp;utm_medium=web\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Substack<\/span><\/a> tho.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Another poem about food that Samin really loves\u2013besides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2021\/09\/06\/magazine19970728refrigerator-1957\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><em>Refrigerator, 1957<\/em><\/span><\/a><em> <\/em>by Thomas Lux, which is her all-time favorite\u2013is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/49622\/perhaps-the-world-ends-here\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><em>Perhaps the World Ends Here<\/em> <\/span><\/a>by Joy Harjo.
