Like his acting choices over the past decade, his directing efforts (<em data-start=\"482\" data-end=\"498\">A Star Is Born<\/em>, <em data-start=\"500\" data-end=\"509\">Maestro<\/em>) have jumped between genres and tones, and <em data-start=\"553\" data-end=\"572\">Is This Thing On?<\/em> continues that streak. It\u2019s smaller, more intimate, and really thoughtful film that I\u2019ve kept thinking about since I first watched it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"700\" data-end=\"1305\"><strong>Will Arnett<\/strong> and <strong>Laura Dern<\/strong> star as Alex and Tess Novak, a long-married couple with two young boys living in the suburbs of New York City. From the outside, everything looks fine: the kids are healthy and smart, their careers are stable, and they live in a nice home. But once the doors close, the cracks show. Nothing huge, just the kind of issues that pile up over time until they start to feel unbearable. They married young, they\u2019ve changed, and while they still love each other, that love has shifted into something unfamiliar. It\u2019s not gone. It\u2019s just\u2026 different.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1307\" data-end=\"1632\">When the film opens, Alex and Tess are separating. Alex has moved into a small apartment and finds himself alone and bored. One drunken night in New York City, he ends up outside the famed Comedy Cellar. The bouncer tells him there\u2019s a cover charge unless he\u2019s going up for open mic. Sure, why not? Free cover.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1634\" data-end=\"1673\">And wouldn\u2019t you know, his name is called.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1675\" data-end=\"1898\">To be honest, this is the most implausible part of the film. What are the odds that someone\u2019s first night at the Cellar turns into stage time?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1900\" data-end=\"2183\">Alex riffs on the current state of his life, and\u2026 he\u2019s not bad. He goes back the next week. And the week after that. Comedy isn\u2019t something he ever planned on pursuing, it\u2019s just a way to get his thoughts out of his head and into the open.<\/p>\n<p>And then he realizes something surprising. He really likes it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2206\" data-end=\"2592\">Meanwhile, Tess is branching off in her own way, trying to find investors for her startup. While they\u2019re apart, both Alex and Tess begin to grow, not into who they <em data-start=\"2371\" data-end=\"2377\">want<\/em> to be, but into who they realistically <em data-start=\"2417\" data-end=\"2424\">could<\/em> be. They still see each other, still share friends and family obligations, and whenever they argue, you can feel the love underneath it all.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2594\" data-end=\"2834\">When Tess eventually finds out about Alex\u2019s stand-up, she\u2019s shocked, but also intrigued. She starts to see him differently. Early on, she tells him he\u2019s not the same person he used to be, but that he\u2019s got his spark back. And she likes it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2836\" data-end=\"2956\">The question becomes though: is that spark enough? Do they risk getting back together, or does growth sometimes mean moving on?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2958\" data-end=\"3252\">Arnett is best known for his comedy work, and I\u2019d bet I\u2019ve seen most of it. I also listen to <em data-start=\"3051\" data-end=\"3062\">SmartLess<\/em>, so yes, I\u2019m a fan. He\u2019s funny and smart as a whip. I expected him to be good here, especially since he co-wrote the film with his longtime friend Cooper, but he genuinely surprised me.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3254\" data-end=\"3646\">Alex is a man who doesn\u2019t want to give up, even though he\u2019s not entirely sure what he\u2019s holding onto. He\u2019s stuck in his routine and quietly wondering how he got here. After the separation, you can feel his wings slowly starting to spread. In one of the film\u2019s most honest lines, he tells Tess, \u201cI don\u2019t hate you. I hate our marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3648\" data-end=\"3950\">Casting Laura Dern, though, is Cooper and Arnett\u2019s master stroke. Every scene she\u2019s in has texture. She finds unexpected angles, delivers lines in ways you don\u2019t anticipate, and elevates even the quietest moments with a look or a pause.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3952\" data-end=\"4205\">Cooper himself, who usually headlines his own films, takes a backseat this time as Alex\u2019s flaky best friend Arnie, an actor who perpetually thinks that he\u2019s on the cusp of success. He\u2019s great, of course. Why wouldn\u2019t he be? He\u2019s probably known a dozen versions of this guy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4207\" data-end=\"4590\">In many ways, <em data-start=\"4221\" data-end=\"4240\">Is This Thing On?<\/em> feels like the polar opposite of <strong>Noah Baumbach<\/strong>\u2019s <em data-start=\"4290\" data-end=\"4306\">Marriage Story<\/em>. That film, which I loved, was bleak, man. This isn\u2019t. Cooper and Arnett aren\u2019t anti-marriage; they\u2019re just poking holes in the idea of it. They\u2019re asking whether marriage can evolve, whether it can make room for individual growth and what happens when it doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4592\" data-end=\"4762\">It\u2019s a warm, thoughtful film about love and how it evolves.
