[Forty years ago this week, the Space Shuttle Challenger<\/i>
\nbroke apart upon takeoff, instantly becoming one of the most visible and tragic
\nAmerican stories of the last half-century. So this week I\u2019ll AmericanStudy that
\nmoment and a handful of contexts.]<\/p>\n

On telling examples of three forms of media\u2019s depictions of the Challenger<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>TV Movies: The live broadcast of the Challenger<\/i>
\nlaunch (and thus the explosion) that I discussed at length in Wednesday\u2019s post was
\nwithout question one of the most gripping TV-watching
\nexperiences<\/a> of all time for those of us who were in that audience. So it
\nstands to reason that TV would lead the way in depicting those events through
\nsubsequent works. The quickest to production, and to this day the most
\ncontroversial, was the ABC TV
\nmovie Challenger<\/i><\/a> <\/i>(1990), which starred Karen Allen as Christa
\nMcAuliffe<\/a> and was criticized
\nas inaccurate<\/a> by multiple astronauts\u2019 family members. But equally
\ninteresting was the much later BBC film The Challenger Disaster<\/i><\/a>
\n(2013), which focused on Richard Feynman\u2019s (played by the great William Hurt<\/a>) controversial
\nrole in the Rogers Commission investigation and report that I highlighted in
\nyesterday\u2019s post. <\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>TV Shows: Those kinds of long-form TV films
\nhave been a principal vehicle through which the medium has depicted the Challenger<\/i>,
\nbut it also has made its way into individual shows and episodes in interesting
\nways over the last decade or so. More exactly, both the drama This Is Us<\/i>
\nand the sitcom Mixed-ish<\/i> have used entire episodes focused on the
\nexplosion as a way to develop character relationships and identities: This
\nIs Us<\/i> with a Season 6 flashback<\/a>
\nto the explosion as part of its ongoing portrayal of Jack and Rebecca Pearson\u2019s
\nyouthful marriage and family; and Mixed-Ish<\/i>, which was a prequel to the show
\nBlack-ish<\/i><\/a> and thus was set in the 1980s, with its first-season episode \u201cWhen Doves
\nCry\u201d<\/a> about the whole family\u2019s reactions to the tragedy. Both of those
\nepisodes suggest that by the 2010s, the explosion had become shorthand for how
\nhistoric tragedies can affect individuals, much like the Kennedy
\nassassination has been<\/a> for Baby Boomers. <\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Memoirs: As you would expect, there have been
\nplenty of books published about the Challenger<\/i> over these last four
\ndecades, from first-hand
\njournalism<\/a> to scholarly
\nanalyses<\/a>. But I\u2019m particularly interested in a pair of memoirs through
\nwhich individuals directly connected to the explosion and especially its investigations
\nsought to advance their own case for what happened. Very soon after the
\nexplosion, Feynman published his second autobiographical book, \u201cWhat
\nDo You Care What Other People Think?\u201d: Further Adventures of a Curious
\nCharacter<\/a><\/i> (1988), which devoted roughly half its length to discussing
\nthe Rogers Commission. A couple decades later, NASA engineer Allan McDonald
\npublished (with co-author James Hansen) his book Truth,
\nLies, and O-Rings: Inside the Space Shuttle Challenger
\n<\/span>Disaster<\/a> <\/i>(2009), which highlights his and others\u2019 pre-launch
\nconcerns and criticizing NASA for going forward with the mission. Memoir is always
\na complex<\/a> and often a strikingly self-serving genre, but these books really
\ndrive home such fraught motivations for life writing. <\/span><\/p>\n
