Demontsrations. Protests. Uprisings. These have been part of the fabric of society since time immemorial. In fact, the right to peaceful protest is considered a right of citizens of free countries everywhere.

Then there is wine. Strongly associated with pleasure and happy times. Surely, far removed from violence and sans any connection to war or conflict?

Not really so. Of all the beverages in existence, wine is the one most often associated with conflict. Wine has been a battleground over fraud, origin, labor, taxation, imports, and survival —and those clashes have shaped much of what wine is today – especially in what is widely known as the Old World regions.

Here is a look at some more modern conflicts triggered by wine, and their impact on the wine world today.

Languedoc

In 1907, the winegrowers of Languedoc and Roussillon launched one of the largest rural protests in modern French history after years of unsold wine, collapsing prices, and widespread anger over fraud. What began with a protest by less than 100 growers from Argeliers grew into mass demonstrations that reached 500,000 people in Montpellier. Soon came tax strikes, municipal resignations, military occupation, arrests, and deadly shootings in Narbonne – the revolt became a national crisis.

The fallout? It forced the state to treat wine as a regulated public concern rather than merely a private commodity. Laws passed in June- July 1907 imposed harvest declarations, regulated sugaring, pursued fraud, and controlled wine movements, while the Confédération Générale des vignerons was founded later that year, giving growers a powerful collective voice.

The lesson from Languedoc is clear: when wine loses its link to honest production and fair livelihoods, legitimacy collapses. The outcome was not simply quieter streets but a new understanding that markets need rules, and that authenticity must be defended institutionally rather than romantically.

Champagne’s violent reckoning

Champagne erupted in its own crisis, driven by multiple disputes

A few years later, Champagne erupted in its own crisis, driven by disputes over grape prices, the use of imported fruit, and bitter tension between growers and houses. According to historical accounts, local farmers attacked shipments, looted warehouses, destroyed bottles and barrels, and the violence became so serious that the French government sent 40,000 troops into the region.

At the heart of the unrest was a deceptively simple question: what made Champagne truly Champagne? The conflict exposed how dangerous it is when commercial practice outruns territorial definition, especially when local growers feel that their reputation is being built on fruit sourced from elsewhere at lower cost. Its long-term importance lies in regulation. The riots fed into the eventual formal definition of Champagne’s geographic and regulatory boundaries, with the settlement of those questions taking years and only reaching a fuller framework in 1927.

The lesson was foundational for the entire wine world: appellation is not just branding, but a political contract between land, producers, and consumers.

The recurring “wine wars”

These early-20th-century revolts did not end producer anger in Europe; they established a pattern that would recur whenever imports, low prices, and identity collided. In April 2016, for example, French vintners near the Spanish border stopped a Spanish tanker, seized the driver’s keys, and emptied the wine onto the roadway in protest against cheap imports, reviving the language of “guerre des vins.”

What makes these later conflicts so revealing is their familiarity. The actors change, and the trade routes modernize, but the structure of grievance remains much the same: local producers feel trapped between falling margins, global competition, and a market that rewards cheap volume over regional value.

What the wine world learned

Taken together, these conflicts show that wine history is full of moments when the bottle became a proxy for deeper struggles over class, region, truth, and state power. Languedoc taught that fraud and economic desperation can produce mass democratic mobilization, while Champagne proved that origin without enforceable boundaries is an invitation to violence.

They also explain why modern wine culture places such weight on provenance, appellation, and transparency. Those concepts were not born from theory alone; they were hammered out through protest, bloodshed, and public crisis.

These stories make for fascinating reading. In fact, some of my favourite books are stories about the history of wine linked with war.

A couple of recommendations for reading on the topic:

Wine and War: The French, the Nazis and the Battle for France’s Greatest Treasure by Donald Kladstrup and Petie Kladstrup.

An unmissable read about wine and how it was central to many stories of heroism during World War II. It was an extraordinary partnership involving everyone from the owners of Paris’s famed restaurant La Tour d’Argent, who rushed to build a wall to conceal their most precious 20,000 bottles, to French soldiers who triumphantly reclaimed Hitler’s enormous cache of stolen wines at the conclusion of the war.”

Highly recommended.

2. Wines of Lebanon: The Journey Continues by Michael Karam

Lebanon has been through incredible strife and hardship, and its legendary producers like Chateau Musar and Chateau Ksara have shown resilience in the face of great hardship.
