What If\u2026 Kraven Survived His Last Hunt?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some What If\u2026?<\/em> stories change one tiny moment and then gleefully smash the dominoes. This one takes a darker route: What if Kraven the Hunter survived the ending of \u201cKraven\u2019s Last Hunt\u201d?<\/strong> J.M. DeMatteis returns to the psychological territory he knows better than almost anyone, joined by artist Y\u0131ld\u0131ray \u00c7\u0131nar, color artist Alex Sinclair, and letterer Joe Caramagna. The result is less multiversal popcorn and more a rain-soaked gothic nightmare wearing Spider-Man\u2019s black costume.<\/p>\n

The divergence begins when Kraven finally looks at Peter and understands that the \u201cSpider\u201d he has spent years hunting was never a supernatural monster. Peter is simply a man\u2014and, after being drugged, buried alive, and psychologically broken, a deeply wounded one. Instead of ending his own life, Kraven returns Peter to Mary Jane. It sounds almost merciful until the consequences arrive.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

Peter is left terrified, fragile, and unable to trust his own mind. Mary Jane and Robbie Robertson eventually place him under the care of Dr. Ashley Kafka, hoping that time and treatment can help him heal. Meanwhile, Kraven does what Kraven always does when confronted with an uncomfortable emotion: he turns it into another hunt. He brutalizes Vermin, takes Spider-Man\u2019s identity for himself, and begins stalking New York\u2019s villains while dressed in the black suit.<\/p>\n

So yes, this reality gives us Kraven-Man<\/strong>\u2014and he is about as emotionally healthy as that name suggests.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

PROS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The strongest part of the issue is DeMatteis\u2019 refusal to turn Kraven into a clean, easily digestible antihero. Kraven recognizes that he hurt Peter, but recognition is not the same as accountability. He still hides inside grand speeches, mystical rituals, and the idea that every problem can be solved by overpowering the right beast. Even when he becomes \u201cSpider-Man,\u201d he treats criminals like prey and uses violence as proof that his new purpose is righteous.<\/p>\n

That makes his eventual sacrifice more interesting. It is not a simple redemption button. Kraven does something genuinely selfless, but he reaches that moment through the same obsessive instincts that caused the tragedy in the first place. He saves Peter because he finally understands that Peter\u2019s compassion\u2014his refusal to surrender completely to darkness\u2014is the strength Kraven could never duplicate by stealing his costume.<\/p>\n

The symbiote is also a clever addition. At first, I worried it might feel like the story was adding another monster to a tale already filled with psychological demons. Instead, it becomes a physical expression of Peter\u2019s trauma. It slips into the cracks left by Kraven, feeds on his fear and rage, and transforms him into the creature Kraven always imagined Spider-Man to be. The irony is deliciously cruel: Kraven spends his life hunting an imaginary monster, then helps create the real one.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

Peter\u2019s final resistance is important too. He spends much of the issue wounded and institutionalized, but when the symbiote tries to kill Kraven, Peter fights back from inside. His compassion survives even after everything Kraven did to him. That is the most Spider-Man moment in the whole comic.<\/p>\n

\u00c7\u0131nar and Sinclair make the book look appropriately feverish. The rain, heavy shadows, violent reds, and distorted panel layouts give the issue the atmosphere of a nightmare that keeps changing shape. Kraven\u2019s black-suited Spider-Man looks powerful but wrong, while the monstrous symbiote-Peter is genuinely unsettling. Even the quieter therapy scenes carry a sense that something is waiting just outside the frame.<\/p>\n

CONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The issue covers a lot of ground for one one-shot. Peter\u2019s breakdown, Kraven\u2019s new career as Spider-Man, the villain montage, the return of the symbiote, and the final confrontation all move quickly. I would have happily spent more time watching this warped version of Spider-Man operate in New York\u2014or seeing more of Mary Jane and Kafka\u2019s attempts to reach Peter.<\/p>\n

Peter also spends much of the story reacting to what Kraven has done. That is thematically understandable, but it briefly makes the book feel more like a Kraven character study featuring Spider-Man than a true two-hander. Thankfully, Peter regains emotional agency in the climax.<\/p>\n

FINAL THOUGHTS: THIS WAS WHAT IF? DONE RIGHT. SOLID TWO THUMBS UP FROM ME.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This one was not a cheerful alternate-universe joyride, but it is creative, haunting, and surprisingly thoughtful. It understands that surviving \u201cKraven\u2019s Last Hunt\u201d would not automatically save Kraven. It would simply force him to live with what he had done\u2014and invent another elaborate hunt to avoid admitting it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

The ending gives Kraven a grave marked \u201cfree at last,\u201d<\/strong> while Peter chooses to believe that his enemy died trying to save him.<\/p>\n

Perhaps he found redemption. Perhaps he found another hunt. Either way, this What If\u2026?<\/em> has claws.<\/p>\n
