Bock, of course, originated in Germany, in the town of Einbeck. Because many 19th century American breweries were founded by German immigrants, they offered a bock at certain times of the year, be it Spring, Easter, Lent, Christmas, or what have you. In a sense they were some of the first seasonal beers. \u201cThe style was later adopted in Bavaria by Munich brewers in the 17th century. Due to their Bavarian accent, citizens of Munich pronounced \u2018Einbeck\u2019 as \u2018ein Bock\u2019 (a billy goat), and thus the beer became known as \u2018Bock.\u2019 A goat often appears on bottle labels.\u201d And presumably because they were special releases, many breweries went all out promoting them with beautiful artwork on posters and other advertising.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s ad\u00a0for \u201cBock\u201d was created for the F. Klemm Brewery of Baltimore, Maryland. In 1880, they had two posters created for them, called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/brookstonbeerbulletin.com\/beer-in-ads-4855-f-klemms-bock-no-1\/\">No. 1<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/brookstonbeerbulletin.com\/beer-in-ads-4854-f-klemms-bock-no-2\/\">No. 2<\/a>.\u201d This chromolithograph was created in 1881 and is entitled \u201cSample Card No. 1 of the F. Klemm Illuminated Bock.\u201d The lithographer was A. Hoen &amp; Co., of 75 Second St., in Baltimore, Maryland. \u201cA. Hoen &amp; Co. was a Baltimore, Maryland-based lithography firm founded by Edward Weber in the 1840s as E. Weber &amp; Company.
