Botswana is one of the few places in the world where a great way to see wildlife is to leave the road behind entirely. In the Okavango Delta, a mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) or a motorboat becomes the vehicle, and the animals come to you at the water\u2019s edge.<\/p>\n

How the Okavango Delta Flood Season Works<\/h2>\n

During my recent trip to Botswana this past April, I was fortunate enough to experience both of these activities. April is typically the month when floodwaters from Angola trickle into Botswana\u2019s Panhandle, then spread slowly through the Delta\u2019s channels, usually reaching camps in June or July and peaking in August.<\/p>\n

This means the wettest, most water-rich months in the Delta line up with Botswana\u2019s clear, dry winter. It also means the extent of water activities in any given week depends on where the flood front happens to be, which shifts every year based on how much rain fell in Angola months earlier. A scenic helicopter flight<\/a> is the clearest way to see how far the water has actually spread. This year, the flood and heavy rain started much earlier than in previous years; camp managers and guides at the properties where we stayed told us water levels were about two months ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n

What a Mokoro Excursion Is Actually Like<\/h2>\n

Our trip began in the northwest part of the Delta at the Jao concession, where water levels were the highest they\u2019d been in the past three years for that time of year. Even with the higher than average water, we were still able to enjoy safari drives, but mokoro and boating were also an option.<\/p>\n

From Jao, we traveled northeast to the Duba concession, where water levels were again high (our safari vehicle at times became more like a boat crossing certain channels). At Duba Explorers Camp, we were advised that the grasses were too high for mokoro. We\u2019d planned to try the motorboat instead, but our guide advised sticking with safari drives due to potential storms. So water activities don\u2019t just depend on water level; they depend on weather, too.<\/p>\n

Since we didn\u2019t get the chance to do a motorboat excursion at Duba, we made sure not to pass it up at our next lodge, Xigera. I\u2019d been on motorboats during safari before, but this one topped previous experiences, since this lodge has a double-decker boat. Cruising the channels, spotting elephants, hippos, crocodiles, Cape buffalo, and red lechwe galloping through the water, and even lions in the distance from that higher vantage point, elevated the experience and made it one I\u2019ll never forget.<\/p>\n

\"Motorboat<\/p>\n

From Xigera, we traveled southeast to Kiri Camp, where we opted to try the mokoro activity. As mentioned above, a mokoro is a traditional dugout canoe, historically carved from ebony or sausage tree wood, though now more often made of fiberglass to help protect those trees.<\/p>\n

Because a mokoro sits low and moves without noise, it gets closer to wildlife than a vehicle ever could. It\u2019s a tranquil experience: your mokoro poler stands at the back and guides the canoe quietly through reed-lined channels. Our excursion lasted a couple of hours, during which we saw many species of birds; even the baboons in the trees seemed aware of our presence.<\/p>\n

\"Mokoro<\/p>\n

The Weather Systems Behind Botswana Water Activities<\/h2>\n

Mokoro trips depend entirely on water depth. When channels are full, roughly May through September, mokoro polers can reach further into the Delta\u2019s interior. During low water, from October into the following rains, some routes become too shallow, and camps shift toward safari drives and walking safaris instead.<\/p>\n

Every water activity in Botswana traces back to two separate weather systems: local rain that falls between November and March, and the much larger flood pulse arriving from Angola months later. A strong wet season upstream can mean a bigger, longer flood the following winter and deeper mokoro routes that reach farther than usual. A weaker one can mean shorter routes, or a camp relying more on safari drives for a season.<\/p>\n

What we can do is match the season to what a client most wants to experience: the stillness of a mokoro glide during high water, or the reach of a motorboat into flooded grassland when the flood is at its fullest. Water levels shift with rainfall hundreds of miles away, so no one can promise exact conditions for a specific week or year. Understanding how this system moves is what lets us set the right expectations and build a trip around water at its best, whatever the year brings.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
