Scholz<\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On a moonless night in 1908, a group of Royal Navy ships sailed into the darkness during a training exercise in the English Channel. To simulate a torpedo attack, one of the vessels set off a flare.<\/p>\n<p>The bright flash was \u201cexceedingly dazzling,\u201d Cecil Vinning, an engineer-lieutenant on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreadnoughtproject.org\/tfs\/index.php\/H.M.S._Tiger_(1900)\">HMS <em>Tiger<\/em><\/a>, later recalled. Because the night was so dark, \u201cit was impossible to see anything afterwards for a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As his eyes adjusted, he realized that the <em>Tiger<\/em>, a torpedo boat destroyer,<em> <\/em>had unexpectedly cut into the path of the <em>Berwick<\/em>, a 10,000-ton cruiser. When the ships collided, the <em>Tiger <\/em>split in two. \u201cThe portion on which I was standing sank to the level of the water,\u201d Vinning said, \u201cand I was enveloped in the wave which came over the side.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/0FBZnVEy8cOEgIx6USn6NoPPy9s=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(960x411:961x412)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/75\/ea\/75eacdff-aa73-4547-b8d9-c37745ac7459\/hms_tiger_torpedo_boat_destroyer_lost_1908.jpeg\" alt=\"The Tiger\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      The\u00a0<em>Tiger\u00a0<\/em>sank on April 2, 1908.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Royal Navy<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One segment sank immediately, while the other stayed afloat for roughly three minutes. More than half of the 57 crew members died on the night of April 2. Vinning was one of only 22 survivors. When the Royal Navy searched the area for the wreckage, the <em>Tiger <\/em>was nowhere in sight.<\/p>\n<p>Now, 118 years later, divers and historians from <a href=\"https:\/\/projectxplore.com\/\">ProjectXplore<\/a> have finally identified the wreckage of the missing destroyer. In court-martial proceedings held weeks after the accident, some witnesses suggested that the flares may have impeded visibility. Even so, \u201cthe court made no specific finding on this point,\u201d according to ProjectXplore\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/projectxplore.com\/The%20discovery%20of%20HMS%20Tiger.pdf\">report<\/a>. As one naval officer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/the-times\/204266076\/\">told journalists<\/a>, \u201cI do not suppose that the mystery will ever be cleared up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day after the collision, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Edward-VII\">Edward VII<\/a> sent a telegram to Britain\u2019s first lord of the Admiralty expressing his sympathy \u201cto the widows and families of those who lost their lives in the <em>Tiger<\/em> disaster.\u201d The wreck made headlines, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/the-daily-telegraph\/204156946\/\"><em>Daily Telegraph<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>describing how the men tried to \u201csave themselves as best they could by clinging to oars, spars and pieces of wreckage.\u201d As a crew member from a nearby ship recalled, \u201cThe <em>Tiger <\/em>had as much chance as a sardine tin against a railway engine.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"insight\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"h4-style\">Quick facts: Other Royal Navy wrecks<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>The <em>Tiger <\/em>is the \u201clast missing 30-knot torpedo boat destroyer sunk in the English Channel,\u201d according to ProjectXplore\u2019s report.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>The other three wrecks of this kind were the <a href=\"https:\/\/canterburydivers.org.uk\/hms-flirt-ship-wreck\/\"><em>Flirt<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreadnoughtproject.org\/tfs\/index.php\/H.M.S._Myrmidon_(1900)\"><em>Myrmidon<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreadnoughtproject.org\/tfs\/index.php\/H.M.S._Bittern_(1897)\"><em>Bittern<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>ProjectXplore has been looking for the <em>Tiger<\/em> since 2022, when researchers began analyzing telegrams, newspaper clippings, court-martial transcripts, logbooks and contemporaneous reports connected with the accident. Based on these findings, they started surveying sections of the seabed with sonar.<\/p>\n<p>The team identified the outline of the wreck in 2025. Divers finally explored the stern section in June. The following month, they dove to the bow section. During these investigations, divers found \u201ccompelling evidence regarding the final moments leading to the collision, preserving details that have remained undisturbed for 118 years,\u201d ProjectXplore writes in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/18ACbMLtgT\/\">social media post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first clue was a dial that displayed the angle of the rudder. The pointer on the dial was set between roughly five and ten degrees to starboard<strong>,<\/strong> suggesting that the <em>Tiger <\/em>\u201chad not altered course to avoid <em>Berwick<\/em> immediately prior to the impact,\u201d per the report. Just last year, the Royal Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalnavy.mod.uk\/news\/2025\/july\/31\/20250731-cruiser-hms-nottingham-found-off-northumberland-after-109-years\">announced<\/a> that the organization had identified the HMS <em>Nottingham<\/em>, which a German submarine torpedoed on August 19, 1916.<\/p>\n<p>The wreckage of the <em>Nottingham <\/em>was \u201cincredibly intact\u2014everything from the bridge back over is as it was the day it went down,\u201d McMullen told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forcesnews.com\/feature\/mystery-missing-ww1-warship-divers-discover-wreckage-hms-nottingham\"><em>Forces News<\/em><\/a>\u2019 Kitty Logan in 2025. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen the propeller that shiny and that well-preserved, ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of the <em>Tiger<\/em> coincides with <a href=\"https:\/\/bills.parliament.uk\/bills\/4065\">new legislation<\/a> that\u2019s currently making its way through Parliament. Some of the proposed amendments to the Armed Forces Bill could designate wreck sites like the <em>Tiger <\/em>as \u201cprotected places\u201d from the moment they\u2019re discovered. Divers, including groups like ProjectXplore, would still be able to visit these sites, but they wouldn\u2019t be allowed to recover objects from them without permission.<\/p>\n<p>The ProjectXplore divers photographed and measured the wreck, but they didn\u2019t remove any objects from the site.
