European settlement expanded during the 17th and 18th centuries. Spain established <a title=\"Montevideo, Uruguay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montevideo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Montevideo, Uruguay<\/strong><\/a> in 1726, as a strategic port, and Uruguay gained independence in 1828, after regional conflicts. Its location shaped struggles between Brazil and Argentina, which influenced Uruguay\u2019s politics, borders, and national identity. Immigration strongly shaped language, food, music, and traditions. European immigrants also helped develop Uruguay\u2019s early vineyards. Gaucho traditions remain important within Uruguay\u2019s rural identity. Partner drinking remains a widely recognized cultural tradition. <a title=\"Candombe, Uruguay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Candombe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Candombe<\/strong><\/a> reflects African heritage within Uruguay\u2019s national culture. Football also became central to modern Uruguayan identity.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Bodega Bouza\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elixirwinegroup.com\/uruguay\/bodega-bouza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bodega Bouza<\/strong><\/a> is located in Montevideo, in the south of Uruguay, on the Atlantic coast. Its vineyards span the neighboring Canelones and Maldonado regions as well, all in this same southern coastal part of the country. Basque immigrants helped establish Uruguay\u2019s modern wine industry. Tannat eventually became Uruguay\u2019s signature grape variety. Immigrants also introduced additional European grape varieties. Early vineyards concentrated around Montevideo and Canelones. Wine production later expanded into other regions.<\/p>\n<p>During the twentieth century, wine production changed significantly. Producers initially emphasized quantity over consistent quality. Later, winemakers began pursuing quality and international exports. Regional experimentation encouraged searching for better growing conditions. Southern vineyards remained Uruguay\u2019s major production center. Canelones became especially important for national wine production. Juan And Elisa Bouza established Bodega Bouza in the year 2,000. They restored a historic winery, which was first built in 1942, by Numa Pesquara. And since then they have grown to be known as Uruguay\u2019s most critically acclaimed producer. (Yes, I feel privileged.) Canelones has fertile soils and R\u00edo de la Plata influences. Maldonado experiences cooler Atlantic conditions and varied geology. These conditions slow grape ripening and preserve freshness. Northern regions experience warmer temperatures and different soils. Those differences create distinct flavors across Uruguayan wines. And, tannins act as a natural preservative and structural backbone, so voila!. That structure gives the wine something to soften and integrate over years in the cellar, rather than falling apart quickly the way a lighter, low tannin, wine might. This is why I dug into the cellar, to prove an important point.
