ISBN: 9781681123578. $29.99. <a href=\"https:\/\/nbmpub.com\/products\/will-eisner\">https:\/\/nbmpub.com\/products\/will-eisner<\/a><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The early life and<br \/>\ncareer of the late Will Eisner have been chronicled extensively in biographies<br \/>\nsuch as <i>Will Eisner: A Spirited Life<\/i> and <i>Will Eisner: A Dreamer\u2019s<br \/>\nLife in Comics<\/i>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Eisner himself discussed<br \/>\nhis formative years in numerous interviews and authored autobiographical<br \/>\ngraphic novels that portrayed his life and world during those times: specifically,<br \/>\n<i>The Dreamer<\/i>\u00a0(<\/span>Princeton, Wisconsin: Kitchen Sink Press, 1986)\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">and <\/span><i style=\"font-family: inherit;\">To the Heart of The Storm<\/i><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit; mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The title under review here, <\/span><i style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Will Eisner:<br \/>\nA Comics Biography <\/i><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">by Stephen Weiner and Dan Mazur, is also told via<br \/>\nEisner\u2019s chosen medium of the graphic novel.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit; mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">While Weiner and Mazur did not have the advantage of being present for<br \/>\nthe events they are portraying, their account of Eisner\u2019s early life and career<br \/>\noften seems more objective and honest than Eisner\u2019s own idealized portrayal of<br \/>\nhimself and his times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">A brief prologue chronicles the early lives of Eisner\u2019s immigrant<br \/>\nparents Fannie and Sam, their marriage, and the births of their sons Will<br \/>\n(1917) and Julian (1921).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Chapter one<br \/>\nbegins in 1925 with the Eisners engaged in what was becoming a familiar routine:<br \/>\nmoving out of their apartment in the middle of the night to avoid the landlord.<br \/>\nIn their depiction of the Will\u2019s nomadic childhood, Weiner and Mazur<br \/>\neffectively establish how the conflicting worldviews of his parents shaped Will<br \/>\nown psyche. Sam encouraged Will\u2019s creative inclinations but was not an<br \/>\neffective breadwinner.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fannie was constantly<br \/>\ncomplaining that the family\u2019s modest circumstances were the result of Sam\u2019s<br \/>\nlack of practicality. As a witness to this ongoing marital conflict, Will<br \/>\ngradually internalized and reconciled these points of view, becoming both an<br \/>\naccomplished creator and an astute businessman. Weiner and Mazur\u2019s skillful and<br \/>\naffectionate depiction of how this process played out in Will\u2019s mind and in his<br \/>\nactions and choices is what makes <i>Will Eisner: A Comics Biography<\/i> such<br \/>\nan enjoyable story.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Weiner uses dialogue very efficiently to reveal much about a<br \/>\ncharacter in a few words while Mazur\u2019s impressionistic drawing style also shows<br \/>\nmuch about a character in a few lines. The characters all talk, move, and emote<br \/>\nin ways that bring them to life on the page and would likely have impressed<br \/>\nEisner himself. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The creators also<br \/>\nprovide informative history lessons on topics such as pulp magazines, Superman,<br \/>\nand even how comics were printed in the 1930s. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>These interludes serve to give modern readers<br \/>\na better understanding of the early days of comics, an era that is now almost a<br \/>\nfull century in the past. <o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Longtime Eisner fans will already be familiar with many of<br \/>\nthe events in <i>Will Eisner: A Comics Biography<\/i>. As mentioned above,<br \/>\nEisner covered much of the same ground in his autobiographical graphic novels <i>The<br \/>\nDreamer<\/i> and <i>To The Heart of the Storm<\/i>. But while <i>The Dreamer<\/i><br \/>\nin particular suffered from a mawkish sentimentality, Weiner and Mazur are<br \/>\ninterested in providing a more honest portrayal of their subject and his world.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is perhaps most evident in their<br \/>\nhandling of the court case of DC vs. Victor Fox.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Victor Fox was a publisher who wanted to cash<br \/>\nin on the Superman craze by hiring the Eisner and Iger shop to create a similar<br \/>\ncharacter named Wonder Man.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Eisner designed<br \/>\nthe character and produced the story to Fox\u2019s specifications.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>DC Comics promptly sued Fox for copyright<br \/>\ninfringement. Fox instructed Eisner to claim under oath that Wonder Man was<br \/>\nEisner\u2019s own idea.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In Eisner\u2019s portrayal<br \/>\nin <i>The Dreamer<\/i> of the events that followed, he took the stand and told<br \/>\nthe truth, thus losing the case for Fox (fig. 1). But in Weiner and Mazur\u2019s hands, Eisner also<br \/>\nharbored a somewhat peevish resentment for the superhero genre.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He displayed no reservations about working in<br \/>\nother formulaic genres, reserving his disdain solely for costumed<br \/>\ncharacters.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>As Weiner and Mazur infer, this<br \/>\nmay have been the result of his declining to publish Superman (and forfeiting<br \/>\nthe potential financial windfall) when he had the chance.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Eisner is also shown to sidestep his self-professed commitment<br \/>\nto comics as a true literary form and instead embrace some of the more<br \/>\nunfortunate pop culture tropes of the time, specifically in his early portrayal<br \/>\nof the Spirit\u2019s African American assistant\/sidekick Ebony White. When<br \/>\nconfronted with complaints that Ebony was a caricature, Eisner\u2019s response is<br \/>\nsimply, \u201cWell of course he\u2019s a caricature \u2013 it\u2019s a comic strip.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>How else do they expect me to draw a Black<br \/>\nsidekick?!\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Though Eisner began to portray Ebony with more<br \/>\nsensitivity in the post-war Spirit stories, the character\u2019s basic design and<br \/>\nspeech patterns remained the same, ensuring a strip which was visionary in many<br \/>\nrespects would always appear dated in its portrayal of one of the principal<br \/>\ncharacters.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">None of this is to say this Will Eisner biography reads like<br \/>\na hit piece or that Eisner is presented as an unlikable person.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Eisner was a tireless advocate for comics as<br \/>\na legitimate art form, a singularly innovative practitioner, and an ambitious<br \/>\nbut scrupulous businessman. All these qualities are present in Wiener and<br \/>\nMazor\u2019s handling of their subject.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The book<br \/>\ncovers Eisner\u2019s post Spirit life and work in a breezy manner, giving the most<br \/>\nattention to the events leading to his creation <i>of A Contract with God <\/i>and<br \/>\nhis struggle to find a publisher.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jeff<br \/>\nsmith provides an affectionate afterward that highlights how Eisner served as a<br \/>\nsource of encouragement and inspiration to younger creators.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><i>Will Eisner A Comics Biography<\/i> will be an enjoyable<br \/>\nand informative reading experience for both longtime Eisner fans and those<br \/>\nseeking an accessible introduction to the man and his work.<o:p\/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Reviewed by Edward Whatley, Professor of Library Science, Russell Library, Georgia College &amp; State University Stephen Weiner and Dan Mazur.
