Hands-On Fun: Bring Shakespeare to Life<\/span><\/h2>\n

Shakespeare was meant to be performed, not just read. Here are a few Shakespeare activities for kids to make it feel real!<\/span><\/p>\n

1.Write Like Shakespeare (But Keep It Simple)<\/span><\/h3>\n

Shakespeare is actually responsible for more everyday phrases than most people realize.<\/span><\/p>\n

Things like:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • \u201cbreak the ice\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  • \u201cwild-goose chase\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  • \u201cgreen-eyed monster\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Once kids realize that, Shakespeare becomes part of everyday. Instead of feeling like they\u2019re reading something old or complicated, they start to see how language connects across time.<\/span><\/p>\n

    You can keep this really simple. Pick one phrase and:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • talk about what it means<\/span><\/li>\n
    • try using it in a sentence<\/span><\/li>\n
    • or rewrite it in your own words<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Sometimes we\u2019ll turn this into a quick little challenge\u2026 who can come up with the funniest or most creative sentence using the phrase.<\/span><\/p>\n

      2. Think Like a Playwright<\/span><\/h3>\n

      Shakespeare didn\u2019t just tell stories, he created characters, conflicts, and moments that people could feel as they watched them unfold. That\u2019s something kids can try too.<\/span><\/p>\n

      You don\u2019t need to write a full play for this to work. Start small.<\/span><\/p>\n

      You can:<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      • come up with two characters<\/span><\/li>\n
      • give them a simple problem<\/span><\/li>\n
      • and write (or say) a short scene between them<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Or\u2026 you can let the kids write and act out a play!<\/span><\/p>\n

        It doesn\u2019t have to be perfect. The goal is just to step into that role for a minute and see what it feels like to create a story from the inside.<\/span><\/p>\n

        3. Make a Shakespearean Ruff<\/span><\/h3>\n

        If your kids are anything like mine, adding something hands-on changes everything. A simple ruff (those collars you see in old portraits) is an easy way to bring the time period to life without overcomplicating things.<\/span><\/p>\n

        You can make one using:<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        • coffee filters<\/span><\/li>\n
        • string or ribbon<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          It\u2019s quick, a little messy, and surprisingly fun. Take it a step further and let the kids try to dress-up with their ruff. Then, take a picture like a painted portrait from Shakespeare\u2019s time!<\/span><\/p>\n

            If reading Shakespeare feels like a stretch right now, starting with a movie can be a really easy way in. There are a few family-friendly options that connect to his stories without feeling overwhelming.<\/span><\/p>\n

            Gnomeo & Juliet<\/strong> is a lighter, kid-friendly version of Romeo and Juliet<\/em> that keeps the main idea but makes it more playful.<\/span><\/p>\n

            The Lion King<\/strong> is another great one. It isn\u2019t labeled as Shakespeare, but it closely follows the story of Hamlet\u2026 <\/em>with themes of family, loss, and stepping into responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

            You can watch together and just pause here and there to talk about what\u2019s happening.<\/span><\/p>\n

            • Why did that character make that choice?<\/span><\/li>\n
            • What would you have done?<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Do you think it would end differently if it were set today?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              It doesn\u2019t have to turn into a full discussion\u2026 just a few small conversations can go a long way.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Shakespeare doesn\u2019t have to feel complicated. At its core, it\u2019s just storytelling about people\u2026 what they feel, what they choose, and what happens next.
