Painting at the Threshold of Change<\/h2>\n

Eric Alfaro<\/a> builds paintings around a paradox: the more recognizable an image becomes, the more readily it can begin to slip away. Flowers, landscapes, water, fish, and human faces anchor his compositions, yet these familiar subjects rarely remain visually fixed. Brushstrokes overlap, reflections shift, color interrupts description, and passages of paint pull recognizable forms toward abstraction. Born in Cuba in 1991 and trained at the Ra\u00fal Mart\u00ednez Academy of Arts in Mor\u00f3n, Ciego de \u00c1vila, Alfaro has developed a figurative practice in which classical foundations meet an increasingly expressive handling of paint.<\/p>\n

His academic education established a strong understanding of form, but Alfaro has not treated that training as a set of boundaries. Instead, it provides a structure from which he can test contemporary approaches to color, gesture, texture, and pictorial space. Painting functions simultaneously as a mode of expression and an opportunity for experimentation. His compositions retain the clarity needed for a flower, face, fish, or landscape to register immediately, while their surfaces introduce another experience altogether. Marks accumulate and collide, areas of different density coexist, and the image can seem caught in the process of becoming something else.<\/p>\n

That tension has accompanied an increasingly international career. Alfaro is represented by galleries in different parts of the world and has participated in exhibitions, contemporary art fairs, and institutional events in locations including Miami, New York, France, Italy, and Luxembourg. His work has also been shown in connection with the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami. Solo presentations have included Portrait Series in Coral Gables in 2019, New Depths at Boffi De Padova in Miami in 2022, Flowers at Lanford Gallery in Cologne in 2023, and the 2024 exhibitions Spring Reverie at Carousel Fine Art in Atlanta and Alfaro: Nature & Beyond at OA Fine Art in Paris.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Eric Alfaro: Nature, Memory, and the Fleeting Image<\/h2>\n

Nature supplies Alfaro with both subject matter and a way to consider memory, emotion, and change. His imagery is connected to personal experience and his Cuban roots, but it also addresses processes that extend beyond autobiography. Blossoms open and fade, water continually rearranges what it reflects, and vegetation transforms with time. Instead of presenting the natural world as permanent or idealized, Alfaro is drawn to its unstable conditions. Beauty becomes inseparable from transition, and the vitality of a scene often comes from the suggestion that its present state cannot last.<\/p>\n

Flowers make that idea especially visible. Alfaro depicts blooms at moments of visual abundance, often placing arrangements in vessels of different forms. Their color and fullness command attention, yet their temporary nature remains implicit. The flower is therefore more than a decorative motif. It allows Alfaro to consider fading beauty and the recurring cycles of death and renewal through a subject whose fragility is universally recognizable. In other compositions, female faces emerge among flowers, bringing human presence into direct contact with the same imagery of growth and impermanence.<\/p>\n

Water, landscapes, and fish introduce movement through different means. Reflections destabilize otherwise recognizable environments, while fish moving through water give Alfaro a natural framework for exploring shifting contours and changing surfaces. These subjects suit his broader interest in appearances that resist permanence. Across them, observation and memory can occupy the same composition without being forced into a clear hierarchy. A scene may originate in something visible, but Alfaro\u2019s painting process transforms that source until color, texture, and gesture carry as much significance as the represented object itself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Building an Image Through Gesture<\/h2>\n

Photography often provides Alfaro with an initial point of reference. Rather than transferring a photograph directly to canvas, he changes individual elements and introduces variations in color before and during the painting process. The reference acts as a framework rather than a destination. Working in acrylic and oil, he employs brushes alongside palette knives and spatulas, choosing among them according to the physical effect required. This variety of tools helps him move between controlled description and passages where the behavior of paint becomes visibly assertive.<\/p>\n

Speed is an important part of his mark making, although quick execution does not mean arbitrary movement. His gestures are deliberate, and variations in paint density contribute substantially to the structure of a work. A viewer may first recognize a flower or reflection and then become aware of the separate strokes, dragged pigment, and layers through which that subject has been constructed. One characteristic technique involves pulling fresh paint horizontally across the surface. Instead of concealing the mechanics of painting in pursuit of seamless illusion, Alfaro permits the material to alter what it depicts. The meeting point between figuration and abstraction is central to Alfaro\u2019s visual language. Impressionist influences and Asian aesthetics are identified among the references informing his practice, but his paintings do not simply reproduce established stylistic conventions. Visible brushwork, layered gestures, color, and controlled variations in material density are brought together within a contemporary approach. Recognizable details remain important, yet Alfaro gives himself enough freedom to disturb them. A reflection can fragment into marks, vegetation can become an accumulation of color, and a flower can remain identifiable even while its edges dissolve into surrounding paint.<\/p>\n

Alfaro frequently pursues ideas through related groups of paintings rather than approaching every canvas as an independent experiment. Repetition gives him room to reconsider a motif, technical decision, or visual problem across multiple works. Flowers, water, landscapes, and other recurring subjects can therefore change from one composition to another while maintaining a larger continuity. Beneath those variations is a sustained investigation of what paint can do: how color establishes atmosphere, how a gesture can suggest motion, and how physical layers can turn an observed subject into something shaped equally by memory and process.<\/p>\n

That language has moved beyond the studio. In recent years, Alfaro has developed large-scale murals in Miami, extending his work into public and architectural settings. His paintings have also entered private and institutional collections internationally, with named holdings including the Copperbridge Art Foundation, F&F Media Corp., and the collection of the Lincoln Center Orchestra in New York. Publications including Artists & Illustrators, International Artist, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, The Four Seasons Magazine, and Expat Living Singapore have featured his work.
