Man, I would like to be able to play guitar like this guy!
So interesting to hear this analysis. Thank you.
I would be quite interesting to see what someone with perfect pitch, like Rick's son, would make of it.
Just re-watched this after about a year. All the chord progression stuff is still a complete mystery but the story is wonderful. Have to conclude Rick Beato = Great Musician + Great Raconteur.
Sounds absolutely dreadful π
Things like this should be outlawed.
This is not rhythmically complex. The title needs to specify. A song is more than chord progressions. I would state that GOLEM II THE BIONIC VAPOR BOY by Mr. Bungle is probably the most all around complex Pop Song of all time.

Sergio Mendes β€οΈ amazing songs. Greetings from Dublin Ireland
Barry Mann is known for writing complex music?
Love the complexity. Glad you caught that. Always enjoyed that song as a kid and I think now itβs because the constant shifts in chords held my attention. I will not take that song for granted anymore.
They had the lyrical arrangement and wrote the chords under it
The legacy of sergio mendez lives on
Rick, this is both hilarious and beautifully analytic — as always. I hadn not adequately appreciated this brilliant bit of composition before. Best regards, T Gabuzda
Scientists of melody
I wuold get lost even while Reading It π€£
A Brazilian musician, known worldwide for the dissemination of bossa nova, samba and Brazilian pop music. These influences marked his style and musical complexity.
Dionne Warwick originally did this song in '82, but Sergio's version is the most well-known.
I think all that modulation is reflective of the feeling that the guy is trying to "open up", i.e., I" loved you then but now I intend to open up and love you even more. "It's a woman's ultimate fantasy – lol. The song is about upping the relationship, letting more light shine through, changing. So all those wonderful changes reflect that! movement But who knew, before your great explanation!!! This video is an amazing ear-training exercise. Thank you!
could this be achieved with a capo?
I was watching a few videos of this song. And there were so many people giving a shout out "Rick Beato brought me here" I'm surprised that a lot of people have never heard if this song before Rick brought it up. You couldn't go anywhere in the 80's without hearing it.
It all sounds so luscious. I love it.
I was a band nerd in junior high & high school.
I was 20 when this song came out, I loved it but I could never understand it.
Kudos Sergio Mendes for this pop masterpiece !
