American Airlines flight headed to Delhi from New York JFK diverted due to security threat
American Airlines, which operates a daily flight between New York JFK and New Delhi, is experiencing a security threat. As a result, the airline is diverting the flight to Rome rather than continuing it to Delhi.
American Airlines 292 Diverts to Rome
AA292, a flight operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner registered N840AN, carrying up to 285 passengers, took off from New York JFK on Saturday night (February 22, 2025). It was bound for Delhi on what should have been a straightforward 14-hour hop.
However, over Turkmenistan, the plot has twisted: a security threat has forced the crew to make a mid-air U-turn, and now the plane is hightailing it to Rome, Italy, for an unscheduled pit stop.
FlightRadar24’s tracking paints the picture: after cruising across the Atlantic, slicing through Europe, and almost flying over to the last leg, the Dreamliner did an about-face at Turkmenistan and backtracked toward Rome. The choice of Rome FCO indicates that the threat is not as severe, which is why American Airlines is sending over the plane to Rome, where there is a setup for the airline with all sorts of infrastructure, rather than landing it somewhere where the airline will have no infrastructure and will have to handle the situation with no boots on the ground.
The plane was escorted by Eurofighter fighter jets when it came into Rome.

American’s crew and pilots will be timed out when they arrive, so the flight is now scheduled to fly later from Rome.
There is not much known, but the airline sources confirmed to another site (I can’t find it now!) that this is a security threat. This is a developing story.
Bottomline
American Airlines is witnessing a diversion from New York JFK to Delhi into Rome for AA292, which took off on February 22, 2025. The flight is not expected to take off anytime soon, as it will need to undergo a scrub before it is ready to go again.
