Maybe Society Shouldn’t Be Based On Gambling? – SOME MORE NEWS

  1. Too late, I already put my bets in.
No seriously America is so incredibly fucked.
Btw, the Dutch government took one quick look at these websites and filled them into illegal gambling and banned it immediately

  2. Crowd studies show that knowing how people predict first mofidies how the crowd predicts. It destroys the prediction capability of the crowd. So when they talk science? Cherry picking.

  3. ACTUAL RESPONSE TO YOUR ADVERT!!!! Christ on a bike! Do you USAmericans realise how much you are being ripped off for telephone/mobile/cellular/data plans. For a non-contract, pay as you go, for $18 a month, I get 100Gb data, unlimited text, and 10,000 free minutes talk-time for a month. I could probably get better for $14 a month on contract. Maybe you want to talk to your representatives about that. You are paying, I reckon about 500% compared to us Europeans.

  4. This theory of, 'The Wisdom of Crowds', is largely attributed to Francis Galton, who discovered that in a competition to guess the weight of the Ox, the median guess was incredibly accurate. However, each person only got one, equally weighted guess, none of them put a million guesses on one particular weight. The Ox's weight was not determined by the guesses, but was an objective fact, so no one who had an interest in the outcome, could actually alter it with said million guesses. The more depressed Trump makes the US and the more scared, the more likely people will pessimistically give him a third term, and a self-fulfilling prophesy is born. 99% people thinking Trump will win, is not a reflection of voting intentions, but will be spun as such to make it happen.

  5. I wanted to add that insider trading using the details of US military operation also jeopardizes the security of those operations. Similar to how people can look at market trends to predict wars (ie spikes in the stocks of pizza restaurants near the pentagon), if polymarket bets all seem to spontaneously move in a certain direction, it could tip off the soldiers on the other side that we are coming. Whatever your views on the military are, I think we can all agree that some random US soldier potentially losing their life because a high ranking official decided to insider trade on the details of a military operation is a horribly dystopian possibility to consider. Needless to say, betting on whether or not a person is going to get assassinated is beyond abhorrent on the face of it. There really doesn’t need to be any additional context to understand that this is bad. I just wanted to add that it is also bad in so many other ways too. You could write a thesis on all the different ways this bad.

This is a level of incompetence I’ve truly never seen before. Our national security secrets have never been this vulnerable.

  6. Update on that suspicious Maduro bet: an aviation crewman attached to SOCOM was arrested for theft of classified information for personal use, and use of classified information for personal gain.

  7. This whole betting bullshit reminds me of that kid in high school who constantly tries to get you to bet him money that he’ll do the dumbest shit ever knowing he’d do the dumb shit but wanting you to give him money for it.

  8. Last Week Tonight is the depressing yet whimsical first course, and Some More News is the more unhinged, in-depth dessert. Sweet yet bitter, like dark chocolate.

  9. although some points were good, I feel like overall your case would have been made a little better if you had more focused arguments against these companies. A lot of points felt overly hyperbolic (and not in a funny way), and it felt a little too much like attacking a strawman when I think there are enough legitimate criticisms of polymarket/Kalshi to be made without (whether intentionally or inadvertently) misrepresenting the way the work.

  10. I don't see how anyone but a ghoul could believe that monetizing every bit of knowledge and every stray thought in your head, and turning every waking moment into a side hustle, is a future the world wants or needs. Like, even if every claim made, by these adult children with the empathic abilities of an extra sociopathic cat, somehow turned out to be true, that's still a horrible vision of the future.

As a survivor of the gaming lootbox epidemic: Fuck gambling. Even when it isn't literally corruption, it still ruins everything it touches in the same way corruption does.

  11. I had never heard of any of these companies. Honestly, this episode doesn't feel real. I haven't been caught so off guard by the world sucking more than I realised since I was a teenager. Like, 25 years ago.
