This Bentley Derby 4.25L, coachbuilt by Thrupp & Maberly, was packed with clever fail-safes, from a hand crank starter backup to twin fuel pump and ignition systems designed to keep the car running if something went wrong.
Current owner and Avants member Alex Haugland of Everyday 2 Exotic gives us a closer look at the practical engineering that made this Bentley so advanced for its time.

I would honestly prefer a hand crank to ever having to replace a faulty starter again. Once had a Honda Legend which required the entire engine to be removed to even access the starter motor
Back when people had the knowledge to do things like that for themselves. Today they would still be stranded because they didn't know their car has these features.
Vehicles back then were amazing, now you don't even have a dipstick to maintain your own oil without some stupid computer.
Been driving 90s vehicles for about half of my life, finally went for an upgrade and brought a 2015 Dodge off the lot, wanted to get a tranny flush done and replace the fluid, first thing they asked is if I had a dipstick… I laughed and said gee idk you tell me as I popped the hood, she came back and said no you don't, the process will take more effort and money to do, never felt so dumbfounded and starstruck in my life after apologizing. Felt like such an ass only for rage to come shortly after about how vehicles are made.
We had this technology before we even had computers if companies actually wanted to make a good product we could have everything be damn near indestructible
Bentley was thinking ahead in 1938.

For some reason, I feel like this was the apex of car design. It’s still the most beautiful car design style up till today.
This makes me mad, the future is fucked. Shitty cheap car parts
Airplanes still have two magnetos and a bit of other redundancy
When manufacturers cared
"Make them realise you are reliable, and they won't care what everyone else is selling" – some guy at bently, probably
Old luxury had God damn style
Reliability! What modern electronics lack and more manufacturers need to implement now. Travel should be reliable. Always
Flip out indicators should make a comeback
Take note carmakers this is real reliability and the right to repair scary isn't it someone might actually start liking your cars again
Now you don't even get a spare tire and a lug nut wrench. 😢

wait, does it have a spare tire?
it's like airplane engineering
He sounds like pirates software
I don't trust this guy
why do old cars was way better in features then the new ones. i honely feel like now thy re making joke of people
So if you bought one of those cars they would train you as a mechanic?

Such a fantastic car. The old Bentley company was incredible.
Back when they gave a fuck
It doesn't have a spare engine. Too bad
Good old engineering.
Now they just put Bentley stickers on Volkswagens and Rolls Royce glues a badge on bmws.
When cars stopped coming back to fix things is when they realised their business modal was wrong
We had this technology before we even had computers if companies actually wanted to make a good product we could have everything be damn near indestructible
Try putting cluch in when u turn it numb nuts
Now you HAVE to navigate through menus on a TABLET to turn off the AC 😉
So why do they suck now
Back when cars were built to be simply fixed
Man i thought it was a background narrator
BMW said fvck all that😂
Bro did not want to snap his wrist on that crank srarter
Side open design needs to make a come back for easy repairs….then again repairs are no longer as easy
