The Noise book review
If you’ve ever needed a book to jolt you out of a reading slump, The Noise absolutely does the job. This was my first experience with James Patterson, and it wasn’t what I expected at all (in a good way!).
The story opens with an unsettling premise: a deafening, unexplained noise tears through a remote survivalist community deep in the forest.
Two young girls are the only survivors, and one of them is… changed. Her behaviour is erratic, almost possessed, and it quickly becomes clear that whatever caused the noise hasn’t simply disappeared. It’s spreading.
From there, the novel expands into something much bigger. Entire towns begin to unravel in strange and disturbing ways, and a small research team is brought in to investigate what’s really going on.
I loved how the mystery unfolded alongside this team’s story. You, as the reader, are piecing things together at the same pace they are, constantly questioning what’s real and what isn’t.
I love stories told from multiple perspectives, and it worked particularly well here. Each character holds a different piece of the puzzle, and as a reader, you’re left trying to connect the dots before the next twist pulls the rug out from under you.
I genuinely had no idea where this was going, and every time I thought I’d cracked it, the story veered in a completely new direction.
One of the most interesting aspects is how slippery the genre feels.
At different points, it reads like a thriller, then something bordering on horror, and then something more speculative and unsettling.
That uncertainty adds to the tension as, at the same time as trying to solve the mystery, you’re trying to understand the rules of the world itself.
In terms of pacing, I found it incredibly readable. Expect reading fifty pages to just flash by because you’re just that engrossed.
The short chapters and shifting viewpoints make it very easy to fly through, especially once the stakes start escalating.
If I had one small critique, it’s that the high-concept nature of the plot does require you to suspend disbelief at times.
But that’s also part of what makes the story so gripping and unpredictable.
Overall, The Noise is a brilliant thriller that genuinely keeps you guessing on every page.
If you enjoy suspense with a slightly eerie edge (and you like not knowing exactly what kind of story you’ve walked into), you’ll have a lot of fun with this one.
