Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:
Fiona and Loid hand in their reports on Donovan’s visit to the hospital. Handler decides to have the analyst go over things. “New Guy” immediately concludes that that former hospital director Surjay is guilty. Handler gives him a lecture on things. While not saying he’s wrong, she says that his way of thinking can lead to error.
Meanwhile, Anya’s class go on a small field trip. They are to collect plant specimens and document them. Becky, Connie, Anya, and another girl observe some plants. Damian and his friend scoff at this assignment. Their teacher, Green, sites an example of why they need to learn this. Anya gets interested in learning survival stuff. When Anya learns that some plants can cure wounds and diseases, she wonders if she can find a plant to help Loid.
Connie shows Anya a plant they can find which can help. As such, Connie, Anya, and Becky go to hunt the flower. Damian sees Anya searching and decides to help. Initially she scoffs at his reaching out since his father isn’t the alien she was promised. But she soon comes round. As Anya tells Damian about how her Dad works all the time, he realizes that he and Anya aren’t dissimilar in this regard.
Anya finds the plant on a 2 square foot island just off the river bank. Damian has to catch her to keep her from falling in. Anya decides to take Green’s lesson in and ties a long vine to herself and a tree. As Green observes, the vine snaps and Damian has to grab her. However, she manages to get one of the flowered plants. Anya thanks him for his help.
At home, Anya shows off the plant. Yor comes in with a whole bunch of another flower that Gympie said would help. Yor brews it and they all share the bitter tea. However, when Yor offers to make dinner, Loid’s stomach starts making noises.
Thoughts/Review:
We get a nice little slice-of-life story in SPY×FAMILY Chapter 140. To start off things, we get an interesting lecture from Handler to the new agent about not assuming stuff. I’m curious as to why Endo-sensei put this in. He had Handler say that this was not only for the rookie’s benefit, but for herself and the rest of the staff in Ostania. I can’t help but wonder if he’s also speaking to the reading audience as well.
On the Eden side of the story, what the new teacher introduced in this episode actually be Thistle. After all, Gympie has a plant-like hairstyle. This new teacher’s hair stype kinda reminds me of a thistle before it opens up. And it seems fitting that he might know stuff about plants like Gympie does, based on the name. We’ll see though.
The main focus on this part of the chapter is Damian and Anya working together. They have their initial verbal clash, but afterward, I like how they actually have a proper conversation. Thus Damian learns that even folks of a “lower class” experience the same kinds of human things he experiences. Ultimately, it seems Damian is going to take a cue from Anya and reach out to his father.
I also like that Anya has learned some things as seen with the vine rope. I’m glad Green held back and let Anya and Damian do their thing to get the flower for Loid. Experience is the best teacher. And Anya beamed at Damian while thanking him for his help. It was a lovely moment.
Finally, it is wild how much Anya takes after Yor. It is a laugh that Yor took a “walk” who knows how far to get her flower herbs for Loid. Thus Yor went the extra mile like Anya did, which was another lovely moment. I look forward to the day when Loid realizes Yor and Anya are his proper family.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
In the end, SPY×FAMILY Chapter 140 is all about the slice-of-life with a side of comedy and plot mentions. I know a lot of folks get frustrated by this. However, these character moments are what make the manga so special when added on top of the plot.
