Is the Chevrolet Tahoe still old-school (and dumb)?

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country

America – what a country. We build the best fighter jets, landed a man on the moon, and have the best movies. I love it here.

But cars… when it comes to four wheels, American companies have historically been stagnant instead of innovative. Surely, a big ol’ SUV like this 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe is more of the same.

…no?

The best way to go old school

The 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe 4WD High Country Overview

One of my favorite Top Gear bits is an episode called “The Worst Car in the History of the World, All Things Considered, of All Time.” Meant as a parody (they somehow come up with a Lexus SC430 as the very worst), the hosts nonetheless bring up some valid points about each country’s offerings.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-side profile2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-side profile

For the American bit, they took a then-modern BMW F10 M5 and drove it through an autocross course. Then they took some American barges from the 1970s, like a Lincoln Continental, and tried to do the same. Yes, for laughs, but the hidden point here was that both of those cars were rear-wheel drive, V-8 sedans. How could they be so different, and the American so lumbering?

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-rear 3 quarter2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-rear 3 quarter

It’s this sort of lazy drive attitude that’s persisted for our country’s cars. They are cheap (they are not), they are rough (they no longer are), and they are inferior (again… no) – the modern American car still lives somewhat in the shadow of the European and Asian brands.

So this Tahoe. On the surface, it is old. Body on frame. Pushrod V-8. Gigantic. Loves to drink gas. It’s not all that much unlike the gigantic sedans of yore. But you have to look deeper – Magnetic Ride Control (with air suspension!), Super Cruise, tri-zone HVAC controls… is this a Cadillac? Or a (gulp) Mercedes?

I think I know the answer.

Performance Score: 8. Sport port

Strip them naked, and you’ll find the same basic chassis shared with a GMC Yukon Denali and Cadillac Escalade. While those SUVs are more expensive, it’s best to think of them as simply different tunes of performance.

Engine

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-start button2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-start button
Nothing like firing up a V-8.

Under the gigantic expanse of the hood is a creamy smooth 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8, and it gets the same 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque as its upscale brothers. Of course, the Escalade V is supercharged, but that’s a wild animal and not really needed for a family SUV.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-tach2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-tach
No forced induction or electricity, just creamy goodness.

It’s smart, too – GM utilizes Dynamic Fuel Management with 17 different cylinder patterns, turning this V-8 into a one-cylinder at times. The 6.2 is exclusive to the High Country trim here, and well worth the extra cash because, man, it’s so silky smooth and effortless with thrust.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-rear exhaust pipes2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-rear exhaust pipes
You hear more of the V-8 in the Tahoe. That makes it my favorite.

The sound, too – Chevrolet uses less sound deadening in the Tahoe than the Yukon or Caddie, so more of that roar comes through. It’s never obnoxious; in fact, it’s quite welcome and gives this utilitarian truck some soul. Revving it just cuz you want to smile is an unexpected surprise.

Transmission

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country transmission2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country transmission
Uhh, 10 on the tree?

This is a ten-speed automatic that was co-developed with Ford. Shocking as that may be, GM still manufactures it themselves and tunes it with their own proprietary software.

It’s effortless and never hunts for gears, making the 5,800 RPM redline nothing to be concerned about. Dare I say it’s nearly electric in its smoothness overall. With ten gears, the top three are really just for overdrive and help keep the engine spinning below 1,500 RPM at 75 miles an hour.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-front 3 quarter2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-front 3 quarter
The Tahoe’s 4WD system works well.

If I had to complain, I’ve never been a fan of the steering column shifter because it’s awkward and makes me feel like I’m in one of those ’70s classics, though I do like that the center console is completely clear. Maybe the Nissan Armada, with buttons, is the best answer here.

Chassis and Steering

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-steering wheel2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-steering wheel
A bit on the sloppy side.

The Tahoe’s biggest differences from the Yukon and Caddie live here.

Obviously, this is a body-on-frame design, and in a world full of unibody crossovers, you might consider that old-school. But Chevrolet gave the Tahoe an independent rear suspension back in 2021, along with Magnetic Ride Control and four-corner air suspension. It’s tuned differently, too – sportier, with less body roll and float. Of the three, the Chevy is the most fun to drive. Put it in Sport mode to firm it all up and reduce body roll even more.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-front 3 quarter2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-front 3 quarter
The chassis of the High Country is sportier than the Yukon.

It’s still a handful though – steering is a bit sloppy just off-center, though it’s heavier and thus gives you more sense of what the Tahoe is doing. It’s also worth noting that the Tahoe is the lightest of the trio at 5,845 pounds, compared to 6,182 for the big-boy Caddie. Before you start barking at me, let’s remember that the new M5 Touring is 5,550 pounds, and that’s supposedly a lot of fun.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-side profile2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-side profile

With four-wheel drive and drive modes managed right on the dash, the Tahoe can handle just about anything you throw at it, from heavy towing to mild-to-medium off-roading. GM makes trucks built for ULTIMATE levels of dirt, but even with all-season on-road tires, the Tahoe never slid or got stuck in the muck I took it through.

Brakes

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-brake disc2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-brake disc
They look tiny, but they work well.

Big 22-inch wheels partially hide somewhat pedestrian 13.5-inch front discs with dual-piston calipers. As a fun guide, my GTO’s front brakes are just an inch less in diameter (12.5).

But these aren’t conventional – this is an electro-hydraulic brake-by-wire setup, meaning you stomp on the pedal, and a computer tells the brakes just how hard you meant to squeeze. Because it’s all managed inside a digital brain, the brakes work seamlessly with the suspension to ensure front-end dive is kept at a minimum. Works remarkably well for such a big boy.

Lifestyle Score: 8. Second Row. Second Best.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-back seat2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-back seat
It’s hard not to love the amount of space you get.

No one else aside from perhaps Hyundai packages their big SUVs as well as GM does, and the Tahoe continues the theme. I could just about stand up in here, my family actually fits in all three rows, and the trunk works without needing to fold down the mezzanine level.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-trunk2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-trunk
Even with the third row up, you get plenty of trunk space.

Where I’m most disappointed is up front – the seats are just not very good. There’s almost no lateral support for the back or bottom cushions, and the shapelessness means I’m sliding around. Trust me, it’s very hard to get my 250-pound frame to do that, so if you’re of the more petite variety, I can’t imagine how you’d be comfortable.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-third row2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-third row
The third row is also big enough for real humans.
2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-front seat2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-front seat
This are far too unsupportive.

If not for those seats, I’d happily give the Tahoe a ten. Both the Yukon and Escalade offer more adjustability and softer materials.

Fuel Economy: 4. Running man

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-fuel guage2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-fuel guage
No, economy isn’t great, but I still prefer the V-8.

The 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe High Country is rated at 16 miles per gallon combined, which is exactly what I achieved.

There are all sorts of options for three-row SUVs, from all-electric to hybrid powertrains, but if you need real grunt and capability, it’s still hard to beat a V-8. Either you can afford the running costs or you cannot, but I doubt adding another two miles per gallon to the overall economy of this thing would make much difference. As mentioned above, it’s already a pretty smart engine.

Features and Comfort: 9. Variety, the spice of life

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-dash2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-dash

The fully loaded Yukon I tried last year rang the register at $108,955. The Tahoe is $10,000 cheaper, and though it’s different, it’s not really worse.

Interior

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-dash2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-dash
The Tahoe’s cabin is slightly down-market from the Yukon.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-foot kick2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-foot kick

Yes, yes, the seats. But move past them for a moment. The screen isn’t pillar-to-pillar tablet-sized, but it’s still very large and just as high-res. I did not miss the Yukon or Escalade’s party tricks. There’s everything from second-row entertainment screens to heated and ventilated cushions – what are you missing, the chill box in the center console? Whatever.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-back seat infotainment2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-back seat infotainment
Rear seat entertainment is integrated well.
2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-dash2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-dash
Chevy still sweat the details in the High Country.

The finishing isn’t quite as bespoke – it’s hard to beat the baseball stitching in the Yukon, and the Caddie is full of leather, but dare I say the Tahoe looks as good as its own hefty MSRP suggests. Jet Black leather feels upscale, even if it’s more rubbery in here.

GM’s interface has gotten better.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-dash2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-dash

It’s not an also-ran to other brands either – this Chevy looks and feels nicer than a Lexus TX or IONIQ 9.

Exterior

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-side profile2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-side profile
This is Sterling Gray Metallic.

This Tahoe is sprayed with a very nice shade of Sterling Gray Metallic. It’s a mostly muted color palette, though you can get Radiant Red Tintcoat just like on a Cadillac V.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-front grille2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-front grille
The Yukon’s brightwork is replaced by black trim here.

22-inch diamond-cut wheels, full LED lighting, and black trim mark some of the visual differences. The Yukon gets a lot more brightwork in the trim, but that’s purely a matter of taste.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-22 inch wheels2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-22 inch wheels
22-inch wheels are standard on the High Country.

My favorite? The power step-up rails that disappear until you need them. Some trucks don’t have them (but desperately need them), some have them but make you wait around when you open the door – but the Tahoe’s just work, and they are big enough to actually step on with my size 13 Nikes.

Zoom out for a minute and look at the landscape. Did your neighbor get a Corvette Z06 because he couldn’t afford a GT3? Did they settle for a Cadillac Blackwing instead of an M5? Or did they grab this Tahoe instead of a Mercedes GLE?

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-front 3 quarter2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-front 3 quarter

I hope not, because all those American cars I just mentioned? I like them better than their European counterparts. They perform better, cost less, and though they often lack the hyper-polished interior fit and finish, they are closer than ever. Finally, buying American doesn’t feel like settling.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-high country badge2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-high country badge

I do not need a three-row SUV. It’s just the three of us—my wife, my daughter, and I. But if I did, I’d seriously consider the Tahoe. As nice as the Yukon is, I like that the Tahoe talks to me a bit more and offers the same level of core content. Yeah, it nearly broaches six figures itself, but an Escalade sails way beyond that in MSRP. It’s a really well-done truck. No one else makes a V-8 like this, and they haven’t since the dawn of time.

2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-rear 3 quarter2026-chevrolet-tahoe-high-country-rear 3 quarter

I’m glad that Chevrolet has resisted the urge to bolt on batteries and forced induction, while honing in on handling and road feel. 25 years ago, GM produced a pair of twins and took the cheap way out – slapping on more leather doesn’t really mean more luxury. But now, each truck is tuned in unique ways. See? Progress.

I think, if that autocross test is run again in 40 years, Chevy won’t have anything to worry about.
