Pins are used in a wide range of mechanical assemblies. While available in different styles, they are typically designed to align, position or hold parts together. Airplanes, for instance, typically have hundreds of pinned connections. You can always install pins manually by hand, but using a pin punch offers several noteworthy benefits.

#1) Designed for Specific Pin Sizes

Most pin punches are designed for specific pin sizes. If you’re planning to install a 5/32-inch pin, you should use a 5/32-inch pin punch. The tip will measure exactly 5/32 inch, thereby matching the diameter of the pin. Using the right-sized pin punch will allow for quick and easy installation of the matching pin.

#2) Protects the Surrounding Material

Using a pin punch will protect the surrounding material from damage. Pins are typically installed by striking with a blunt object, such as a hammer head. Punch pins have a narrow tip that focuses this force directly onto the pin. As long as you use the right size and position it over the pin, the pin punch will protect the surrounding material from damage.

#3) Large Striking Area

Don’t let the narrow tip fool you into thinking that pin punches are difficult to strike. Most pin punches have a large striking area. Located on the opposite end of the tip, the striking area is wide and flat, making it easy to hit with a hammer. This large striking area serves as the target for hammer strikes. During installation, you should place the pin punch over the pin and hit the punch’s striking area with a hammer.

#4) Strong and Durable

Pin punches are strong and durable. They are exposed to heavy mechanical stress in the form of hammer strikes, so manufacturers design them with an emphasis on strength and durability. Many pin punches are made of heat-treated alloy steel. This allows them to withstand heavy, forceful blows without cracking or deforming.

#5) Ergonomic

In addition to being strong and durable, pin punches are ergonomic. They typically feature a soft, cushioned handle. You can comfortably grab and hold the handle to stabilize the pin punch when striking it with a hammer.

#6) Supports Pin Removal

Some people assume that pin punches can only be used to install pins, but this isn’t the case; they can also be used to remove pins. If a pin is stuck and you’re struggling to remove it manually, a pin punch may offer a solution. Assuming the pin is in a through-hole with a clear exit, you can punch it. A long pin punch will allow you to force the pin all the way through the hole.
