What are some topics for this Friday sports thread?
How about the MLB playoffs? Go White Sox and/or Padres I guess.
Or USC’s pathetic response to nearly murdering Oregon QB Dante Moore last Saturday? Just as bad among the broadcasters!
Plus the NBA is within shouting distance!
October truly is the greatest month for sports fans. Football in full swing, baseball playoffs, WNBA playoffs, NBA and NHL getting underway.
Two college football games I want to pick here that would qualify for the Saturday games if they weren’t tonight.
- #28 Pitt at #27 Virginia Tech (-3), 7, ESPN. This is an interesting ACC matchup between two teams with nice starts who haven’t been overly challenged. The Hokies, now helmed by exiled Penn State coach James Franklin, does have two wins against Power 4 opponents, but they are Maryland and Boston College, while Pitt’s best wins are Syracuse and Central Florida. Meh on both ends. Hokies are a good running team, Pitt is strong defensively. This is likely to be a low scoring match and I will take Pitt as a slight road dog based on the likelihood of slowing down the Tech running game.
- #36 Northwestern at #37 Penn State (-2.5), 8, FOX. I really like what Northwestern is doing here. They gave Indiana a very good game, though it’s possible the Hoosiers are not what they were last year. Meanwhile, Penn State suffered a brutal loss to Wisconsin, collapsing after a big lead. That was also the first decent team the Nittany Lions have played. Penn State was probably overrated anyway to start the year, but while Matt Campbell is a solid coach, it was too much to think he could import Iowa State to the Big 10 and really compete. I definitely like Northwestern as slight road dogs.
