YuYu Hakusho is an old but gold battle shonen anime that helped popularize the genre alongside Dragon Ball, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, and even Flame of Recca. To this day, YuYu Hakusho remains one of shonen’s best offerings, which features powerful characters like Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama as they confront demons through deadly tournaments, supernatural missions, and intense wars between the human, spirit, and demon worlds.

Chu Has Upper S-Class Demon Potential

While Chu started off as a C-class demon in YuYu Hakusho, he eventually reached greater power after training under Genkai and Natsume. By the time the Demon World Tournament began, Chu was already at middle S-class level, but after a heavy defeat against Natsume, he continued to grow rapidly, showing clear potential to reach upper S-class status and even approach or surpass Natsume and Kujou’s level over time.

Chu is best known for his signature alcohol empowerment fighting style, which grants him increased strength and power after consuming the Ogre Killer drink. Once he’s intoxicated, he applies his Drunken Fist: Sui Ken technique, which further makes him an unpredictable opponent on the battlefield.

Shigure Is a Master Swordsman

Shigure is also known as the Doctor of Darkness, who implanted the Jagan Eye in Hiei’s forehead after hearing his life story in YuYu Hakusho. He is also a master swordsman who wields a peculiar blade called the Phosphorous Ring Sword, which looks like a large chakram.

Shigure is one of the strongest figures in Mukuro’s territory, strong enough to overwhelm Kurama in his base form in the finals of the Demon World Tournament. Though Shigure lost the fight, he remained faithful to his warrior principles, choosing death over surrender and accepting his defeat with unwavering honour.

Kurama Commands Fear Through His Mind and Strength

Kurama is yet another powerful fighter in YuYu Hakusho renowned for his beautiful yet ruthless demon fox form and his wide arsenal of plant-based techniques like Demonic Plant Manipulation, Leaf Blade, Pollen of the Flower of Forgetfulness, and his iconic Rose Whip.

Within Team Urameshi, Kurama stands out not only for his exceptional combat abilities but also for his remarkable intelligence, allowing him to outthink opponents as effectively as he defeats them. By the end of the series, Kurama becomes the trusted right-hand man of Yomi, reflecting how much his strength and demon energy have grown, especially after his decisive victory over Shigure.

Shura Lacks Experience But Possesses Great Potential

Calling Yusuke Urameshi weak and easy to beat is very typical of Shura in YuYu Hakusho. While Shura loves to speak arrogantly and looks down on his opponents, he has the strength to back up his confidence despite his immaturity and inexperience, mostly due to his demonic upbringing.

Shura is Yomi’s cloned son and, just like his father, is a fearsome contender on the battlefield. Against Yomi, Shura pushed his body to its absolute limits, striking recklessly in quick succession even as the overwhelming difference in experience and power began to show. Though he lost the fight in the end, Shura proves that even an inexperienced fighter like him can stand his ground.

Hiei Rises to Upper S-Class Demon Status

While Hiei is best known for his Jagan Eye – which grants him enhanced perception and control over his demonic abilities, as well as mastery over deadly dark flames – a major part of his strength also comes from the intense training he undergoes under Mukuro, which further refines his abilities.

Though Hiei lost to a half-powered Mukuro in the Demon World Tournament, his combat performance was nothing short of exceptional. Even before Hiei became an upper S-class demon in the series, he was already stronger than most of the characters in YuYu Hakusho, including Yusuke, whom he nearly killed in the beginning.

Yusuke Urameshi Is Powerful But Falls Short of the Strongest Title

Being the main character of YuYu Hakusho doesn’t mean Yusuke Urameshi becomes the strongest in the end. While Yusuke received major power-ups throughout his journey, from inheriting Genkai’s power to unlocking his dormant demon lineage, he fails to end YuYu Hakusho as the strongest character.

Still, Yusuke Urameshi is an exceptionally powerful fighter whose strength and adaptability increase as a battle drags on, allowing him to fight demon kings and push past his limits in the series. His ability to combine both spirit and demon energy allows him to fight on equal footing with the strongest villains in YuYu Hakusho.

Raizen’s Friends Dominate the Demon World Tournament

Raizen’s friends are a group of powerful upper S-class demons who often engage with Raizen in friendly sparring sessions. That alone is proof that they possess incredible amounts of demon energy, having been able to keep up with the strongest character of YuYu Hakusho.

Among Raizen’s friends, Enki is widely regarded as the strongest. Though he looks like a mediocre demon who often watches tournament matches in the bleachers with many other weak demons, his full strength is incredibly close to Yomi, suggesting that he is the strongest among Raizen’s friends. Likewise, the remaining allies of Raizen are formidable in their own right, consistently dominating battles throughout the Demon World Tournament.

Yomi Defeats Yusuke Without Going All Out

Yomi’s name literally means “underworld” in YuYu Hakusho, which makes it fitting that he stands among the three most powerful kings of the Demon World. He has one of the highest demon energy levels in the series too, amounting to 1,550,000, just a bit lower than Mukuro’s recorded Youki.

Additionally, Yomi is also one of the fastest characters in YuYu Hakusho, with movement so fast that it often appears as if he is teleporting across the battlefield. More impressively, even with his reduced demon energy, Yomi is still able to keep pace with Yusuke Urameshi in an exhausting 60-hour battle! Just imagine how far Yomi could continue fighting without intentionally reducing his Youki!

Mukuro Is the Strongest Female Character in YuYu Hakusho

One of the Three Kings of Makai, Mukuro is the strongest female character in YuYu Hakusho. Unlike her peers, Mukuro’s power level increases or decreases depending on her mood. In a nutshell, the more hatred Mukuro feels, the more powerful she becomes. The limit of Mukuro’s power fully depends on her negative emotions, making her an unpredictable opponent on the battlefield.

Throughout the series, Mukuro has never shown the full extent of her abilities. Even during the Demon World Tournament, Mukuro only used half of her maximum strength against Hiei, an upper S-class demon at the time of their battle.

Prime Raizen Stands Above All Others

As a purebred Mazoku, Raizen automatically stands above every upper S-class demon in YuYu Hakusho. At his peak, Raizen is recognized as the strongest in the Demon World, with power so strong that not even Yomi and Mukuro’s combined strength can match it. He truly deserves the title of Battle God (Master War or Warrior God in other translations) due to the many battles he won offscreen.

If it weren’t for Raizen’s decision to starve himself, he would have lived longer in YuYu Hakusho and could have remained the undisputed ruler of the Demon World for many centuries. Even in his weakened state, Raizen’s demon energy measures 1,322,000, suggesting that his prime power level was vastly beyond imagination.
