Honduran-American singer, songwriter, and producer Empress Of has released “Blue Light,” a collaboration with Blood Orange that serves as a centerpiece of her new album Dream House. Produced by Lorely Rodriguez, Romil Hemnani, Cecile Believe, and Q Marsden, the track arrived on September 18 through Major Arcana and Giant Music. It runs just under three minutes and finds two of indie pop’s most distinctive voices trading verses about the desire to feel something real in a world mediated by screens.

Empress Of was born Lorely Rodriguez in Los Angeles on October 19, 1989, to Honduran parents. She grew up in the San Fernando Valley and spent her childhood summers in Honduras, absorbing the music and language of her family’s home country. She began playing piano at five and started recording her own music while studying at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU. Her 2015 debut album Me announced a voice that could move between English and Spanish without asking permission, and she earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording for the track “Woman Is a Word.” Her subsequent albums, including Us in 2018 and I’m Your Empress Of in 2020, refined her approach to electronic pop, while her collaborations with artists including Khalid, M.I.A., and Jim-E Stack expanded her reach. Dream House is her fourth studio album and arrives after a period of significant personal and creative transition.

Blood Orange, born Devonté Hynes in London on December 23, 1985, is one of the most influential figures in contemporary alternative music. He began his career as a teenager in the punk band Test Icicles before forming Lightspeed Champion and eventually adopting the Blood Orange moniker. His 2011 debut album Coastal Grooves introduced a sound that blended R&B, funk, and indie rock, and his 2013 album Cupid Deluxe became a critical touchstone. Freetown Sound in 2016 and Negro Swan in 2018 deepened his exploration of race, sexuality, and identity, and his work as a composer for film and television, including his score for the Netflix series Master of None, has earned him further acclaim. His presence on “Blue Light” marks a reunion of sorts, as he and Empress Of have moved in the same creative circles for years.

Romil Hemnani, the lead producer on the track, is best known as a member of Brockhampton’s production team. His work with Empress Of on Dream House represents an expansion of his palette beyond the boy band context that made him famous. Cecile Believe, a singer, songwriter, and producer who has worked with SOPHIE and PC Music, contributes additional production. Q Marsden, a producer whose work spans electronic and experimental music, rounds out the team.
